Jonathan dos Santos thought about retirement in 2020

The Mexican international suffered several injuries while with the Los Angeles Galaxy last year and at some point he even considered retiring from the game.

In 2020 the Los Angeles Galaxy had the worst season in their history, failing to make it to the playoffs and finishing in 10th place with 22 points in the Western Conference. The bosses decided to part ways with Guillermo Barros Schelotto before the end of the regular season and this year they appointed Greg Vanney as their new manager.

The 2020 Major League Soccer (MLS) season was also not the best for two of the LA Galaxy’s franchise players, Jonathan dos Santos and Javier Hernández. The former suffered several injuries that kept him sidelined during the majority of the season and he played only 13 out of 22 games for a total of 700 minutes.

I did consider retiring at some point and I believe that 2020 was one of my worst years as a footballer. I suffered a serious knee injury in the past, but at least I knew when I would reach full-fitness. Unlike last year, when I suffered the groin injury I didn’t have a set day to return because it is a tricky injury. I suffered a lot last year,” said the LA Galaxy’s captain during an interview with Ahora o Nunca from ESPN.

Jonathan also spoke about the arrival of his compatriot Javier Hernández, who also disappointed in his first year in the MLS. The veteran Mexican striker only played 12 games due to several injuries and was only able to find the back of the net on two occasions. Now he is entering his sophomore year and Dos Santos believes he will make a big impact for the 2021 MLS season.

“I have talked a lot with Javier and he is very motivated because he is aware he didn’t perform as expected in his debut season with the LA Galaxy. I believe that ‘Chicharito’ is the best player we have in the team and he will be of great value this upcoming season. He seems happy and motivated so expect big things from him this year,” he added.
