When will the fourth season of American Gods begin?

The fantasy drama series based on the Neil Gaiman novel has just aired its third season, but fans are already awaiting a release date for season four.

Update:
The fantasy drama series based on the Neil Gaiman novel has just aired its third season, but fans are already awaiting a release date for season four.

The latest season of American Gods was released earlier this year and has drawn a dedicated group of fans despite facing numerous production issues in the last year. The fantasy drama series, based on the novel of the same name, has just concluded its third season and there is already intense anticipation for the next instalment.

The third season premiered on 10 January this year and concluded on 21 March, broadcast exclusively on Starz in the United States. The creators had initially intended to shoot both the third and fourth seasons at the same time but pandemic complications made this impossible.

Will there be a fourth season of American Gods?

As the season three finale only premiered last night there has not yet been a definitive decision on a fourth season, but it does seem likely that there will be more. Starz has not yet ordered another set of episodes but with a storm brewing at the end of season three the producers have certainly left themselves plenty to work with in future.

Reports from as far back as 2019 claimed that author Neil Gaiman and showrunner Charles “Chic” Eglee were already working on a storyline for a fourth season. Having lasted through numerous cast changes it seems unlikely that the creators would be willing to let the show finish so abruptly.

American Gods star may already know the series’ ending

Despite there being no official word on the next chapter, actor Ricky Whittle has already claimed that the writers are planning on doing another series and has dropped some hints about what to expect from season four.

In an interview with Collider, Whittle said he had “seen how the whole story plays out, through Seasons 3 and 4” in the writers’ room.

He added: “I know how the story potentially does end now, which allowed me to play the character throughout Season 3 with the mindset of moving towards Season 4.”

So not only does it seem like a fourth season is on the horizon, but also that it could well be the last in the series’ storyline. Fans will be desperate to know how American Gods concludes, but they may have some time to wait; each of the previous seasons has been released on a biannual basis, suggesting a 2023 release date for season four.

If you can’t wait that long, Whittle suggests rewatching season three for some big hints on where the series will end up:

“If you look deeply, you can find all the information you’re ever gonna need on this show,” he said. “So, there are a lot more Easter eggs in Season 3, alluding to what’s gonna happen in Season 4 and where we go. It’s very exciting to me.”
