CAS approves sanction of Persepolis player over racist celebration
The CAS has rejected the appeal filed by Iranian club Persepolis regarding the ban imposed on their striker Issa Alekasir over his racist celebration in the ACL quarter final last season.
The Court of Arbitration For Sports (CAS) has rejected the appeal submitted by Iranian club Persepolis over the sanction imposed on their striker Issa Alekasir, who was handed a six-month ban for his unethical celebration in the AFC champions league quarter-final last September against Pakhtakor.
Alekasir, who netted twice in the game, used his hands to pull his eyelids while celebrating one of his goals, which was deemed a breach of article 58.1 of the discipline and ethics code (2019 edition) by the AFC disciplinary committee.
As a result, the disciplinary committee decided on 4 October to suspend the Persepolis striker for six months as of 5 November and hand him a $10000 dollars fine.
Persepolis lose last hope to recover their star
The AFC appeals committee had later rejected an appeal submitted by Persepolis to lift or reduce the player's ban before CAS supported the AFC resolution, which means the player has to see out the full duration of his ban and pay the whole fine amount.
Persepolis proceeded to the final game in the ACL last season but lost the title decider 2-1 to South Korean Champions Ulsan Hyundai.
