Cruz Azul ready to rely on experience in Concachampions

The 2021 CONCACAF Champions League round of 16 starts today with Marathón (Honduras) visiting Portland Timbers (MLS). Later Alajuelense (Costa Rica) hosts Atlanta United (MLS) and then Arcahaie (Haiti) will play Cruz Azul (Liga MX) at the Félix Sánchez stadium. There are four more games scheduled for tomorrow and Thursday and the second-legs will be played next week.

Cruz Azul: the team with the most experience

According to transfermarkt, the 25 players that were included in Cruz Azul’s roster for this tournament have a total of 150 games in the Concachampions. Out of those 25 players, Alejandro ‘El Cata’ Domínguez is the one with the most experience, adding 40 appearances in six seasons.

The striker from Cruz Azul, Jonathan Rodríguez, is the top scorer in the Liga MX with 19 goals in 13 appearances. But in the Concachampions he only has one appearance and he will not play tonight against Arcahaie in Haiti because of the manager’s decision. The striker from Uruguay didn’t make the trip for this game.

Club América - the most successful team

The ‘Eagles’ will make their debut in the tournament tomorrow against Olimpia in Honduras. In international competitions, Club América has won ten FIFA recognized club trophies, the most for a club from CONCACAF. Also they have a total of seven Concachampions titles, the most in the history of the competition.

América registered 27 players for the 2021 CONCACAF Champions League and they added 119 appearances in this tournament. Luis Fuentes is the most experienced one with 25 games in four seasons, followed by Alonso Escoboza (16) and Bruno Váldez (16).
