Mexico Olympic team to be vaccinated before Tokyo Games

The Mexico youth national team obtained their ticket to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics this summer after defeating Canada in the semifinals on 28 March. They went on to defeat Honduras in the final to win their third consecutive title and now the coach of ‘El Tri,’ Jaime Lozano, is working on the final roster that will defend the gold medal in Tokyo.

Lozano is working on a preliminary list of 50 players that needs to be submitted to the president of the Mexican Olympic Committee, Carlos Padilla. The deadline to submit this preliminary roster is 30 June and the idea is to vaccinate all of the players prior to the start of the tournament.

“The preliminary roster has to be submitted by the end of June so we can work on getting the covid-19 vaccines ready. We want to vaccinate all 50 players because we don’t know who will be included in the final roster to attend the Olympics,” said Padilla during an interview with ESPN.

Working on a plan for the international players

Each team participating in the Olympics can include three players above the age of 23. So if Lozano decided to include players that are in Europe then the Mexican Olympic Committee has to work on a plan to vaccinate them in the country they are currently living.

We are already talking with the health authorities and we are working on a plan to vaccinate the players that are in Europe. So once we have the preliminary roster we will contact the Olympic Committee of that country so they can vaccinate the player,” Padilla said
