Day 1 of the 2021 NFL Draft was dominated by quarterbacks, cornerbacks, and the University of Alabama.

As many expected over the last two years, Trevor Lawrence was the undisputed first overall pick after Jacksonville selected the Clemson quarterback with the opening pick of Day 1.

QB's dominate the top 5

The first two picks went off with out a surprise, after the New York Jets look BYU QB Zach Wilson. The Jets were in the market for a quarterback a week after shipping Sam Darnold off to Carolina, and the former Cougar talked of winning Super Bowls in his first interview as a Jet.

The first real surprise came with the number three pick, when the San Francisco 49ers took North Dakota State’s Trey Lance. The Niners traded up with clear intentions of getting a crack at one of the five quarterbacks projected to go in the first round.

Many had Mac Jones as Kyle Shanahan’s top choice for the third pick in this years class. Jones is a pocket passer that can drop a 60 yard bomb over the shoulder of his receiver. He’s the type of quarterback that Shanahan has had so much success with over the course of his still blossoming career as a coach.

49ers kept their draft intentions secret

But the Niners, who gave full control of this years top choice to their head coach, took Trey Lance. A modern aged quarterback who can sling the ball all over the field or tuck and run when the pocket collapses.

This year was the third time in history that three quarterbacks were chosen in the first three picks. After all was said and done there were five quarterbacks taken on Day 1.

The Chicago Bears took Ohio State QB Justin Fields with the 11th pick, and the New England Patriots selected Mac Jones hoping that he will be able to fill the void left by Tom Brady after his departure last offseason.

This years draft was the first time we have ever seen seven offensive players taken to start the first round of the draft. The first defensive player was taken by the Carolina Panthers.

After seven straight offensive picks, Horn was first defensive player drafted

Jaycee Horn broke the streak of offensive sided players drafted in this years opening round when he was selected by the Carolina Panthers. The former Gamecock cornerback won’t have far to travel from his old home of Columbia, SC to his new home in Charlotte.

Alabama cornerback Patrick Surtain II was drafted right after Horn, and gave us a sign of things to come, because he’s both a cornerback and because he played at Alabama.

The quarterbacks may get all the headlines in tomorrow’s papers, but there were just as many corners taken in the first round the this year's Draft as there were gunslingers.

Horn, and Surtain II, who both happen to be second generation NFL talents (Joe Horn, and Patrick Surtain) were the first of an array of coverage defenders to be selected on Day 1. The Tennessee Titans took Virginia Tech’s Caleb Farley at #22, and the host city Cleveland Browns took Northwestern’s Greg Newsome II before the Packers could take Georgia’s Eric Strokes with the 29th overall pick.

Alabama tie record with six first round picks

The University of Alabama tied the 2004 Miami Hurricanes for most first round picks taken in a single draft with 6. The Crimson Tide alum selected was Jaylen Waddle who reconnects with his old college teammate Tua Tagovailoa.

Another trend that emerged in this years draft was the reuniting of former college teammates. LSU’s Ja’Marr Chase was the third overall selection will join ex LSU Tiger QB Joe Burrow in Cincinnati.  Heisman Trophy winner DeVonta Smith, and another Alabama alum will be catching passes from his old quarterback, Jalen Hurts.

A new trend in the NFL emerging?

Something we have never seen before, a college quarterback/running back duo drafted by the same team in the first round. The Jags made history when they took Clemson’s Travis Etienne at 25 after drafting Trevor Lawrence with the first overall pick.

After Waddle, Surtain and Smith were drafted, Mac Jones was next up. Bama’s QB finds himself calling New England home after Bill Belichick and the Patriots made Jones their potential quarterback of the future.

The Raiders took a gamble with their first round pick, but must have seen something they like from Alabama offensive tackle Alex Leatherwood. Leatherwood was a bit farther down most most drafts but the Las Vegas franchise saw something they liked.

Last but not least, and the first running back taken in this years draft was Alabama running back Najee Harris. Harris is headed to Pittsburgh after the Steelers took the power house running back with in the 24th spot in the first round.

Day one was just the start. There are two more days and six more rounds still awaiting us before the 2021 NFL Draft comes to a close.

32) Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The Bucs know they don’t necessarily need any immediate fillers with their first pick of the 2021 NFL Draft. With all of their starters from their Super Bowl winning team returning, they could look to the future and they hope that Washington EDGE Joe Tryon will be a big part of their not so distant future.

The 6’5” 260 pound EDGE rusher didn’t play last season after the Pac 12 season was postponed. In 2019 Tryon was named to the second team All Pac-12. He had 41 tackles and eight sacks  that year, and proved that he is worthy of a first round selection.

The first round ends with there EDGE rushers drafted in the final picks of Day 1

With the 32nd pick in the 2021 NFL Draft the Tampa Bay Buccaneers select Washington EDGE Joe Tryon

31) Baltimore Ravens
Jason Oweh is the second pick of the Ravens first round in the penultimate pick of Day 1.

Baltimore will always be a defense first organization, no matter how explosive Lamar Jackson’s offense is.

The 6’5” 240 pound EDGE runs a sub 4.4. forty yard dash and is a physical marvel. He was groomed in a fantastic academy of disruptive defenders at Penn State.

Despite not registering a sack last year, the Ravens know he can be a big difference maker on the defensive side of the ball this year and in the future.

With the 31st pick in the NFL Draft, the Baltimore Ravens select Jayson Oweh

30) Buffalo Bills
With their first pick in the 2021 NFL draft the the Buffalo Bills select Miami Hurricanes EDGE Gregory Rousseau.

The former high school wide receiver and safety has packed on a few pound of muscles since entering college. Rousseau was the 2019 ACC Defensive POY, and despite sitting out last year to be with his family the Bills think he will fit in perfectly on the the end of their defensive line.

The only question is how will a Florida boy, who went to college at University of Miami handle that Buffalo Cold?

With the 30th pick in the NFL Draft, the Buffalo Bills select Miami EDGE Gregory Rousseau

29) Green Bay Packers
Yet another corner back off the board with the 29th pick in the draft as the Packers select Georgia cornerback Eric Strokes.

Strokes had four picks in nine games this season and was in the conversation for best corner in a stacked SEC.

With the 29th pick in the NFL Draft, The Green Bay Packers select Georgia cornerback Eric Strokes.

28) New Orleans Saints
The Saints have a lot of holes to fill this year, after a big chunk of their team departed over the offseason. While Drew Brees’s shoes may take years or decades to fill the Saints knew they weren’t getting a QB in the first round of this years draft.

The Saints go defense with the 28th pick of the draft and select Houston DE Payton Turner. The edge rusher finished his senior season with 25 tackles and five sacks.

With the 28th pick in the NFL Draft, the New Orleans Saints select Houston DE Payton Turner

27) Baltimore Ravens
The Ravens ramp off their offense with the 27th pick of the NFL Draft. Minnesota Wide receiver Rashod Bateman will be joining Lamar Jackson in Maryland this season.

After a flurry of receivers were take in the half of the opening round Bateman is the next off the board.

The former Golden Gopher is a pure route runner, and will provide a deep threat for Jackson especially when he uses his feet to get out of the pocket.

With the 27th pick in the NFL Draft, the Baltimore Ravens select Minnesota WR Rashod Bateman.

26) Cleveland Browns
The host finally get a crack at a first round pick. With the 26th pick the Browns take Northwestern cornerback Greg Newsome II.

Aside from quarterbacks, this has been a corner heavy draft and Newsome II was dubbed as a top 5 CB.

The fans around the Draft Theater in Cleveland seemed to be pleased with the selection of former Wildcat.

This is the first time ever Northwestern have produced two first round draft picks in the same year.

With the 26th pick in the NFL Draft, the Cleveland Browns select Northwestern cornerback Greg Newsome II

25) Jacksonville Jaguars
With their second pick in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft, Jacksonville takes the second running back in as many picks after Pittsburgh selects Najee Harris.

Travis Etienne will join his college teammate Trevor Lawrence in Jacksonville, and again we see college teammates reuniting, or in this case never separating. Both jump from Clemson to Jacksonville and will be under the guidance of Urban Meyer.

With the 25th pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, The Jacksonville Jaguars select Travis Etienne.

24) Pittsburgh Steelers\
If recent history has shown us anything, it’s that drafting an Alabama running back is never a bad idea. Think of Mark Ingram, think Derrick Henry, think Trent Richardson.

The Steelers select Bama RB Najee Harris with the 24th pick in the NFL Draft.

Not only a National Champion last year, but he ran for nearly 1,500 years and won the Doak Walker Award (Nations best running back)

Harris makes it six Alabama players that have been drafted in the first round of the 2021 draft.  They have tied Miami’s record set in 2004

23) Minnesota Vikings
With the 23rd pick in the NFL Draft, the Minnesota Vikings select Virginia Tech Offensive lineman Christian Darrisaw.

Darrisaw came into this draft very high on a lot of people board. Tackle has not been too common of a position taken in this years first round.  Darrisaw did not allow a single sack last year.

Va Tech has gone back to back in the last two picks

With the 23rd pick in the 2021 draft the Minnesota Vikings select Virginia Tech offensive tackle Christian Darrisaw

22) Tennessee Titans
Caleb Farley goes 22nd to the Tennessee Titans who could use a boost in the secondary.

Farley, who is at home alone due to a positive covid test, wowed in his first year at the cornerback position.

Impecable size, and a gliding stride allows him to shadow receivers, and don’t bet against him in a jump ball situation. The former Hokie didn’t play in 2020, but had 4 picks and 20 tackles in 2019

With the 22nd pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, the Tennesee Titans select Virginia Tech corner Caleb Farley

21) Indianapolis Colts
The Colts may have been fortunate to see Kwity Paye drop to 21, and could not pass up the opportunity to take one of the best edge rushers in the this years class.

At 6’2” 215 pounds, Paye has a the speed and potential to turn the edge that few do in this draft class.

He is quick and versatile, which creates real problems for opposing offensive lines.

Paye had a health scare just weeks ago at his pro day, but was medically cleared, and will be playing edge for Indianapolis next season.

With the 21st pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, the Indianapolis Colts select Michigan edge rusher Kwity Paye

20) New York Giants
Wide receiver Kadarius Tony will be playing for the New York Giants after being taken 20th in the NFL Draft.

The top weapon in one of college football’s top offenses last year, Tony will add another weapon to the GIants WR core for Daniel Jones to target this season.

Jones is an extraordinary route runner with quick feet off the line, and size to bounce off defenders and rack up yards after contact.

Tony had 10 touchdowns while piling up 984 receiving yards in last year.

With the 20th pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, The New York Giants select Florida WR Kadarius Tony

19) Washington Football Team
The Washington Football Team went defense with their opening pick of the first round. Kentucky linebacker Jamin Davis will be patrolling the middle of the defense for the boys from DC.

A fantastic run defender, Davis get most of his accolade in pass coverage. He had five interceptions in his career, and a 42 inch vertical will mean that even if he doesn’t make the pick, he has the ups to deflect passes.

18) Miami Dolphins
Jaelen Philips may not even have to change area codes after being drafted by the Miami Dolphins with the 19th pick.

The Miami Hurricane was one of the top pass rushers in the country last year. He has all the assets you could wish for in a edge rusher, but there were concerns of his injury history coming into the draft

With the 19th pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Washington Football Team selects Kentuky LB Jamin Davis.

17) Las Vegas Raiders
The Raiders look to deepen their offensive line with Alabama tackle Alex Leatherwood with the 17th pick in the NFL Draft.

The AP All American was a little lower down the board on many experts top talents list, but it seems like Las Vegas saw something they liked by taking Leatherwood with their top pick

The Oakland Raiders take Alabama Offensive tackle Alex Leatherwood

16) Arizona Cardinals
The Arizona Cardinals look linebacker with their opening round of the NFL Draft.

The Cardinals have a number of needs coming into this years draft, which put them in a position to essentially take the best player left on the board.

Collins is a 6’5 260 pound linebacker is a run stuffer and can come in and made an immediately in Arizona.

With the 16th pick in the NFL Draft the Arizona Cardinals select Tusla OLB Zaven Collins

15) New England Patriots
The Patriots are still seeking new life after Tom Brady. It looks like Cam Newton may not be the face of the future in Foxburough. Mac Jones will be playing under his college coach Nick Saban’s good friend Bill Belichick.

Jones is has pin point accuracy, and can throw sideline to sideline. His quickness and mobility has been a question coming in. The new age of quarterbacks in the league comes with a prerequisite of some long legs able to stretch out a defense.

But Bill Belichick did alright winning six Super Bowls, with a not-so-mobile quarterback, Tom Brady.

The National Champion winner Jones is a proven winner, going to a winning franchise with a winning coach.

With the 15th pick in the 2021 NFL Draft the New England Patriots select Alabama QB Mac Jones

14) New York Jets
After a trade with the Minnesota Vikings the Jets look to strengthen their pass protection with USC Guard Alijah Vera-Tucker.

The Jets knowing they need to keep Zach Wilson’s jersey clean.

Alayja allowed just 5 sacks in over 900 career snaps at USC.

With the 14th pick of the 2021 NFL draft the New York Jets select USC offensive lineman Alijah Vera-Tucker

The Jets have traded with the Vikings to secure the 14th pick in the draft

13) Los Angeles Chargers
Rashawn Slater is the second offensive lineman to be drafted in the first round of the NFL Draft. He goes 13th to the Los Angeles Chargers.

The former Northwestern lineman was tabbed as potentially the best lineman in the draft, even better than Penei Sewell.

He will be tasked with taking care of QB Justin Hebert

The Los Angeles Chargers take Rashawn Slater with the 13th pick in the 2021 NFL Draft

I knew, I wanted to be in blue!

Micah Parsons, LB, Dallas Cowboys

12) Dallas Cowboys
Dallas traded the 10th pick to the Eagles, who in return got the 12th selection and select Penn State LB Michah Parsons.

The top linebacker in this years class, he has a nose for the ball, imposing size and incredible speed that makes his a dangerous pass rusher off the edge.

Parsons didn’t play last year, but the Cowboys know their Penn State linebackers, Sean Lee served Americas team over the last decade.

With the 12th pick in the NFL Draft, the Dallas Cowboys select Penn State LB Micha Parsons

11) Chicago Bears
Justin Fields is off to the windy season after being taken by the Bears at #11.

The two time Big Ten POY is the fourth quarterback taken in this years first round.

A killer arm, and plenty of pocket presence with legs to stretch a defense give something the fans in Chicago haven’t seen in a long time. Explosiveness and play making ability are the back bone of Fields’ style of play.

The Bears traded from Andy Dalton this offseason, so there will be an interesting preseason that awaits in the Windy City.

The Chicago Bears select QB Justin Fields with the 11th pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

The New York Giants have traded the 11th pick of the draft to the Chicago Bears

10) Philadelphia Eagles
DeVonta Smith is Philly’s first round pick at the 10 spot, after trading with the Dallas Cowboys.

2020’s Heisman Trophy winner is the third Alabama player player selected in the first round. And he will reunite with his college quarterback Jalen Hertz.

It seems like this is a new trend in this years NFL Draft. Wide receivers hooking back up with their college gunslingers.

The Eagles traded up to get Smith, so they must have seen something they more than just liked about the Bama WR.

With the tenth pick in the NFL Draft the Philadelphia Eagles select DeVonta Smith

9) Denver Broncos
Patrick Surtain is a Bronco after Denver takes the Alabama safety with the ninth pick in the draft.

Patrick Surtain II, the son of former NFL cornerback, is the second straight defensive pick, and the second Alabama player taken in the top 10 of this years first round.

He has a high football and IQ, and a cornerback pedigree that is unmatched. His size and speed had many people thinking he would be the first defensive player taken off the board

The Dallas Cowboys have traded the 10th pick to the conference rivals Philidelphia Eagles. This is our first in draft trade this year

I’m ready for the challenge, I can’t wait

Patrick Surtain, CB, Denver Broncos

Two straight defensive players drafted after seven consecutive offensive players and Drew Lock breathes a sigh of relief.

The Denver Broncos select Patrick Surtain II with the ninth pick in the NFL Draft

8) Carolina Panthers
The first defensive player taken in the NFL draft is Jaycee Horn. The South Carolina cornerback won’t have to far to go, moving just a few hours north of Williams Brice Stadium to Charlotte.

Horn, the son of former New Orlean Saint receiver, has exceptional coverage skills and the plays with a chip on his shoulder that you would only except with Joe Horn’s Blood.

Horn breaks a streak of seven consecutive offensive players picked

With the 8th pick in the NFL Draft the Carolina Panthers select Jaycee Horn.

7) Detroit Lions
The Detroit Lions have selects Penei Sewell with the seventh pick in the draft.

After trading Matt Stafford to LA in exchange for Jeff Goff the Lions go with the Oregon offensive lineman. Sewell was almost universally considered the top lineman in the class, and will now be tasked with keeping Detroit’s newest quarterback’s jersey clean.

The Detroit Lions Pick is in!

I'm trying to be a part of something special

Jaylen Waddle, WR, Miami Dolphins

6) Miami Dolphins
Jaylen Waddle is off to the sunny shores of Miami with the 6th pick in the draft.

The most explosive, and maybe the fastest wide receiver in the class reunites with his former college quarterback at Alabama, Tua Tagovailoa.

For the second straight pick we see first rounders who were college teammates reunite in the NFL. Coincidentally both quarterbacks were injured last year due to a lack of protection, but both franchises opting for receivers over lineman

Jaylen Waddle goes to the Miami Dolphins with the 6th pick in the NFL Draft

Take a look at what Ja'Maar Chase did at LSU, and what's to come in Cincy

5) Cincinnati Bengals
Ja’Marr Chase is the first wide receiver taken in this years NFL Draft.

Chase will join last years first overall draft pick and former LSU teammate Joe Burrow.

Burrow missed almost half the season with a knee injury, and a lack of pass protection for the future of their franchise.

This pick could have been used to get the top tackle in the draft but Cincy went with the flashy pick, but Burrow will have a lightning bolt of a weapon with Chase at wide receiver next season.

I'm gonna put on a show

Ja'Marr Chase, WR, Cincinnati Bengals

The Cincinatti Bengals select Ja'Marr Chase with the fifth pick in the NFL Draft

This is a glimpse of what the Atlanta Falcons are getting with their fourth overall pick Kyle Pitts

I think I can make an impact early

Kyle Pitts, TE, Atlanta Falcons

4) Atlanta Falcons
Kyle Pitts is going to Atlanta with the fourth pick in the NFL Draft.

Pitts is the first tight end ever taken the top five in NFL history, and for good reason.

At 6’5” 255 Pitts is a matchup nightmare for opposing defenders.  His size makes him impossible for corners and safetys to contend with, and his speed will give linebackers headaches.

Kyle Pitts is going to Atlanta with the fourth overall pick in the NFL Draft

For the third time in NFL History three quarterbacks have been selected in with the top three selections

Lance played just one game last season before the North Dakota State season was cancelled due to COVID

3) San Fransico 49ers
Wow!!! North Dakota State’s Trey Lance will be the quarterback of the future for the 49ers.

In the most magnified, scrutinized, polarized pick in this years draft the 49ers take Lance, leaving many picking their jaws off the floor.

Mac Jones was the out and out favorite to go to San Fran because he fits the bill for a prototypical Kyle Shanahan offense. But Lance’s mobility set him apart from the Alabama QB

San Francisco kept their pick secret until the very last minute

“I just found out two minutes ago” say Lance.

I just found out two minutes ago

Trey Lance, QB, San Francisco 49ers

With the third pick of the 2021 NFL Draft the San Francisco 49er select Trey Lance!!!

The Atlanta Falcons are now on the clock

THE SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS PICK IS IN!!!

The spotlight pick of the first round is about to be announced. The Niners need a QB, but who will it be at #3?

2) New York Jets
Zach Wilson is the second quarterback drafted in as many selections.

BYU’s Wilson completed over 73% of his passes in 2020. He burst onto the scene after his freshman year. A sophomore year was hampered by injuries, but he came back last season with a fantastic junior season.

“We’re going for the Super Bowl”

Confidence will not be lacking under center.

I'm going to give it everything I've got

1) Jacksonville Jaguars
Trevor Lawrence is the top pick of the 2021 NFL Draft!

A Surprise to absolutely nobody, the Clemson quarterback has been the favorite to go first overall since his National Championship winning freshman year.

His arm strength, touch, mobility and intelligence will most likely be on display on week one for the Jags.

He is the kind of player who can make the transition from college to pro in a matter of months.

No one is surprised Lawrence goes number one. But after months of speculation it is finally official. Trevor Lawrence is now a Jaguar

With the first pick of the 2021 NFL Draft the Jacksonville Jaguars select Trevor Lawrence!!

The New York Jets are now on the clock with the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft

The pick is in! A celebration going on in the Jaguars draft hub, and we await offcial word from Roger Goodell

If the Jaguars knew who they were taking at the one spot coming into tonight, they certainly aren't showing it. They have taken more than five minutes and counting to make their pick

NFL Draft order

Here is the draft order for picks 1-24 in this years 2021 NFL draft

Alabama WR's DaVonte Smith and Jaylen Waddle made sure they are going into the NFL in style

ESPN's Ian Rapoprt, on San Fransico's third overall pick

NFL Drafts with QB's going in the top three picks:

1971: 1) Jim Plunkett, 2) Archie Manning, 3) Dan Pastorini

1994) 1) Tim Couch, 2) Donavan McNabb, 3) Akili Smith

If the top three picks in this years NFL Draft are QB's, it would be the first time in history three QB's have been taken with the first three selections.

We are 50 minutes away from the Jacksonville Jaguars going on the clock. Who will they draft? And how long will it take them to announce it.

draft picks

Remember last year...

Quick! And no cheating - who were the first three picks in last year's draft? Those are their handwritten draft cards, on display at the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

It doesn't quite match the glamour or attact the attention of the Oscars, but the suits of every year's draft class are always talking points.

NFL DRAFT DAY IS FINALLY HERE!!!

Wide Receiver DeVonta Smith could be the first receiver picked tonight.

Why?

2020: 13 games, caught 117 passes for 1,856 yards and 23 touchdowns. Won the Biletnikoff Award and the Paul Hornung Award. And became the first WR since Desmond Howard at Michigan to win the Hesiman trophy. That's why.

A big question coming into the NFL Draft concerns those who sat out last year. Will NFL teams hold it against them? And will it cost them positions high up in the board.

Will Micah Parsons be the first defensive player in the NFL Draft? The Penn State linebacker sat out last year to prepare for this year's draft. Patrick Surtain II is also in the mix to be the first defensive player in the draft.

"It's an epic night"

Shad Khan, Owner, Jacksonville Jaguars

Who is the best talent in the draft? Trevor Lawrence is the sexy pick. The one that has been attracting attention for the last few years. But Kyle Pitts made incredible strides this year at the University of Florida, and doesn’t just look like the best TE in the Draft. He looks like he might be the best player in the draft.

The 6’5 245 pound ball catching behemoth dominated defenses in Gainesville last year. He can play in the hash marks or as a slot receivers.

His big play ability has shot up him up the board and most expect the Atlanta Falcons, who have the fourth pick in the draft, to take the former Gator.

Pitts would become the first ever tight end to be taken top five in NFL Draft history.

Over the last month, the 2021 NFL Draft has been dominating headlines of the sports world. Trevor Lawrence is, and has been the favorite to go number one overall. We aren’t expecting any surprises from the Jacksonville Jaguars with the opening pick in the draft, but what happens after that is anyones guess.

The New York Jets are next on the board and BYU’s Zach Wilson is almost universally the number two selection across draft boards everywhere.

The 49ers will be the first real question mark in the draft. The Niners traded up to get the third pick in this years draft with eyes on a quarterback. Mac Jones is the favorite, but Trey Lance and Justin Fields are also in the mix,

Regardless of who goes third, this is the year of the quarterback in the NFL Draft. Five are expected to go in the first round of this years selection show

QB Mac Jones is excited to be picked by anyone. He's so polite. No matter who it is it will "be awesome". 49ers are said to be very interested. They have third pick.
