Over 1.1 million more third stimulus checks sent out

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announced on Wednesday that it had distributed more than 1.1 million third stimulus checks in its latest payment run, taking the overall number of checks sent out to 164 million.

As part of President Joe Biden’s $1.9-trillion coronavirus relief package, which was signed into law on 11 March, qualifying Americans are being issued with a stimulus check - officially known as an Economic Impact Payment - of up to $1,400.

$386 billion in third stimulus checks now paid out

In all, eight weekly batches of third stimulus checks have now been sent out, at a total cost of around $386 billion.

This week’s payment run included around 570,000 so-called ‘plus-up’ checks, worth almost $1 billion in total. ‘Plus-up’ payments are being distributed to people who have already received their third stimulus check, but now qualify for a larger amount based on the information in their recently-processed 2020 tax return.

The eighth batch of third stimulus checks also featured 585,000 payments, worth more than $1.2 billion, to Americans whose details the IRS did not have on record to send them their check, but who have now provided this information by filing a tax return.
