Columbus Crew rebrands and fans react to the new logo and name
The reigning MLS Cup champions, Columbus Crew SC, are set to unveil their new logo and name sometime this week for the 2022 MLS regular season.
The Columbus Crew are making a lot of changes for the 2021 Major League Soccer season. The reigning champions are expected to move to their new home this July with the venue set to be named the New Columbus Crew stadium, replacing the historic Crew stadium where they won the MLS cup last season.
The new stadium will cost around $314 million and it is located at the centre of the Astor Park development. The New Columbus Crew stadium will seat 20,000 fans and includes 30 suites and 1,900 club seats. The construction started on 10 October 2019 but was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic last year.
Rebranding their name and logo
The team from Ohio is expected to drop their ‘Crew’ nickname and they will be called Columbus Soccer Club for the 2022 Major League Soccer season. There were some leaked images of the new logo and the majority of the fans didn’t react well to the changes.
“I live down in Cincy. Have been hauling my ass up 71 for 8 years now. I will no longer support the club. I’ll put on the disgusting orange and blue that this low down here wear before I support this [changes]. Absolute fucking hell no,” wrote a fan on Twitter.
Statement from Columbus Crew SC
“Recently, images have surfaced depicting a new logo for the Columbus Crew SC. The Crew and the Black and Gold remain at our core, and we continue to embrace and respect our heritage while modernizing our marks as our club and the city of Columbus evolve. We look forward to revealing those in their entirety in the near future.”
