LALIGA SANTANDER
How many times have Real Madrid won LaLiga on the final day?
As we head into the final day of LaLiga Santander 2020/21, both Madrid sides are in contention for the title. But have Los Blancos ever been in this position before?
José Zorrilla was a Spanish poet and dramatist, and he became National Laureate. He was born in Valladolid in 1817 and died in Madrid 76 years later. The football stadium named in his honour, located in his birth place, now becomes a life or death arena for the red and whites from where he spent his final days. Atlético Madrid know that a win at the club now owned by rival legend Ronaldo will hand them their first league title since 2013/14. If they fail to collect all three points, Diego Simeone and co. will be nervously checking a scoreline from the capital.
Another creative artist, but with boots on his feet rather than a quill in his hand, Alfredo di Stefano, lends his name to the other venue in the limelight on Saturday evening. There, due to the revamping of the Santiago Bernabéu, Real Madrid will look to put Villarreal to the sword, in what is likely to be Zinedine Zidane's latest farewell game.
LaLiga final day: title for Atlético or Madrid
Both Barcelona and Sevilla remained in the title race until very recently but last week it became clear that the trophy would be heading to one of the Madrid giants. It has been a unique season for a number of reasons - most notably due to the ongoing pandemic that has removed supporters from the stands - but the destination of the title has gone right down to the wire, something that didn't appear likely just a few months ago as the rojiblancos held a comfortable advantage.
LaLiga news:
But with Los Blancos in search of LaLiga number 35, we wondered if they had ever clinched it on the final day before. The answer, a most definite yes, on five occasions, but they have actually been involved in title decision days with just 90 minutes remaining on 20 previous occasions.
The first of those successful five nailbiters came way back in 1932, although they were leading going into that last matchday. The same happened in 1980, 2003, 2007 and 2017, with Madrid already in pole position before taking to the field.
If title number 35 is achieved in 2021, then it will be the first time that Los Blancos have done so coming into it in second place. And how sweet it would be to leapfrog their city rivals in the process.
