Four USMNT players win their respective league titles
Timothy Weah, Jordan Siebatcheu, Brenden Aaronson and Zack Steffen were the four Americans that won their respective league titles this season.
The 2020/21 season in several European leagues was very successful and promising for the future of the United States men’s national team. Several of their players established themselves in various clubs in Europe and had breakout campaigns that culminated with them winning their respective league titles.
Timothy Weah
The 21-year-old American striker joined LOSC Lille in July 2019 and his contract expires in June 2024. During the 2020/21 Ligue 1 season he scored 3 goals and made 28 appearances. He was included seven times in the starting XI, substituted in 21 times and left on the bench on 6 occasions. He played a total of 863 minutes this campaign in France and on the final match day Lille won the 2020/21 Ligue 1 title.
This is the first time since 2011 that they have won the league title after defeating Angers 2-1 on Sunday evening. Paris Saint-Germain made a late push to try to win the trophy, but their 2-0 victory against Brest was not enough for them to get their hands on the prize.
Jordan Siebatcheu
The United States international arrived on loan to BSC Young Boys for this season and he made a quick impact in Switzerland first tier league. Siebatcheu scored 12 goals and gave four assists in 32 league appearances. Last month the American striker helped Young Boys win their fourth consecutive Swiss Super League title.
Brenden Aaronson
The former Philadelphia Union player arrived at Red Bull Salzburg this year and he made an immediate impact for the team managed by Jesse Marsch on the pitch. Brenden Aaronson helped Salzburg win their second consecutive league title and the club’s 15th trophy in their history. The American player scored five goals and gave five assists in 20 league appearances.
Zack Steffen
The starting goalkeeper for the United States men’s national team had little participation in the 2020/21 Premier League season, because he is the second option to Ederson. Steffen only had one league appearance which was on matchday 17 in Manchester City’s 3-1 victory against Chelsea.
He was praised by manager Pep Guardiola who said he has the talent to take over the starting role in case anything happens to Ederson. Zack Steffen and the ‘Citizens’ won the 2020/21 Premier League title and now they are preparing for the UEFA Champions League final on 29 May against Chelsea.
