Luis Enrique: "It's tough, but Ramos hasn't been able to compete since January..."

Luis Enrique explained his reasons for leaving Sergio Ramos out of his Spain squad for the Euros. The Spain coach named his 24-man list on Monday - but no Real Madrid players featured in his squad for the tournament.
The team's leader: "If anything defines us, it's that we are a team. That goes beyond the weight that some of the veterans might carry; I think there are 12 players who are under 25. The national team is quite balanced. All of them have to put in the effort and carry the team when they need to. A lot of it will depend on the atmosphere we create".
Why wasn't there a place for Sergio Ramos in the two vacant centre-back places? "I've been sufficiently explicit about why. I look about how the players have performed and make my decisions. I'm sure there are other ways of going about things. My job is to make decisions and that's what I do".
Ramos injured after last call-up: "That's got nothing to do with it. The last time he was only just coming back from an injury, he played the first half of one game and then played against Kosovo when unfortunately, he got injured. The reason is because he has hardly played with his club since his most recent injury":
How did you break the news to Ramos: "It was a civillized conversation, as it should be".
Has he been omitted for the way he has behaved? "No. We look at every detail, and fortunately, the way that all of the players have behaved during my time in the job has been amazing".
No Real Madrid players in the list: "Maybe if Carvajal and Ramos had played more, they might have been in the list. I understand that every club wants their players to be called up, but sometimes they ask for their players not to go because it interferes with their calendar. They don't come if they are injured".
Goalkeeper's position: "I had it as clear in my own mind as it could be. We always look at performance. It's a special position, but I have no problems rotating the goalkeepers. I base my decisions on how I see them in training. Pau is injured and Kepa has played a lot less than we would have liked. Those are the three keepers who I have the most faith in".
Gerard Moreno: "Whenever he has been here with us, he's given us so many solutions up front. The team comes first but all of the players are important".
Spain's objectives at the Euros: "I don't view myself as being inferior to anyone or superior to anyone. I am happy and excited with what I've seen of our team. What we can do is improve our performance levels and aim to go all the way and win".
Defence: "It's very clear in my mind, but a lot of it will depend on the teams we face and what I see in training. For me, it's more important that the players know what they have to do in every system, from there, I will use the most convenient players in my view".
