United Airlines Vaccine contest: how does it work?

As borders closed and stay-at-home orders were implemented, flights were canceled, workers in the airline industry were laid off, and fleet sizes were decreased to meet demand. Nearly 400,000 individuals in the industry were laid off or furloughed during  the pandemic. The impacts of the pandemic on the sector are almost impossible to overstate, especially considering that in 2020, the industry took in only forty percent of the profits they saw the year before.

McKinsey and Company hypothesize that the increased demand for traveling by plane is fueled by individuals vacationing for leisure rather than business travel. In most crises, travel for work tends to take a bit longer to meet normal levels. As more and more people become vaccinated and are eager to travel to see friends and family, United is offering a chance for free flights to those who can prove they have been vaccinated.

To continue to incentivize people to begin planning trips, United Airlines is offering a raffle. Those interested can enter by uploading a picture of their vaccine card before 22 June. The card must be uploaded to a United Airlines account, which can be created when uploading the vaccine card.

What are the prizes?

There are two parts to the sweepstakes. Thirty people will be selected to win “a roundtrip flight for two in any class of service, anywhere United flies.”

The second prize will only be given to five individuals and includes “one year of free travel to any of our global destinations in any class of service for themselves and one companion traveling with them.”

The “companion” selected by the winner cannot change; it always must be the same person.

Winners will have between 15 July 2021 and 14 July 2022 to make a maximum of twenty-six trips. If trips go unused, they are void and cannot be transferred or redeemed for their cash value.

How to enter?

Those with a Millage Plus account will be able to log in and upload a picture of their vaccination card. Those who would still like to enter but do not have a Millage Plus account can create one for free and upload their card. Winners will be contacted through the e-mail associated with the account, so the information must be up to date.
