Around 2:30 pm ET (20:30 CEST) a number of passers-by on Madrid’s Paseo de la Castellano, noticed an enormous column of smoke coming from the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, the home of Real Madrid. 'Los Blancos' have played at the ground since 1947.

Fire at Bernabéu renovation works

The ground is currently being renovated, and according to club sources, the fire occurred within the work, with a piece of polyurethane foam burning, and was quickly extinguished without causing serious damage or injury to any individual. The Madrid fire brigade did attend the scene of the fire to ensure it was fully put out.

Real Madrid are not currently playing at the Bernabéu to allow the works to be carried out as quickly as possible, and with no spectators allowed in due to the covid-19 pandemic. The team coached by Zinedine Zidane are playing their games at the club's second stadium, the 6,000 seater Estadio Alfredo di Stefano.
