REAL MADRID

Jadon Sancho's United move could affect Real Madrid's plans for Haaland and Varane

The forward is set to join United for €100M. The English club will have less money to spend on Varane and Dortmund will be more reluctant to let Haaland go.

Jadon Sancho's United move could affect Real Madrid's plans for Haaland and Varane

Jadon Sancho's 85 million euro move to Manchester United (plus 10M in add-ons) is practically a done deal but not yet official. It will be one of the major transfers of the summer and could directly affect Real Madrid and two players in particular. One of them is Raphaël Varane. The huge outlay which United will make for Jadon Sancho will take a chuck out of their budget, leaving less money to sign Varane. At the same time, Borussia have confirmed that they do not intend to sell Haaland this summer - as they cannot afford to lose both of their star forwards during the same transfer window.

Varane: United, PSG or renew

In Varane's case, all of the available options - a new contract or transfer remain on the table. The player would only consider renewing with the promise of a pay rise which is at odds with Madrid, who are aiming to reduce their wages bill due to the pandemic. Talks are set to continue and club sources have told AS that as of the moment, no decision has been made. United is not the only club interested in taking Varane - PSG are also keen. The French side have lined up three summer reinforcements: Wijnaldum, Achraf and Donnarumma, the latter two pending an official announcement from the club. Signing Varane and keeping hold of Mbappé would be a huge boost for their medium-term project.

Reports in England suggest that United would struggle to find the 60 or 70 million euros which Real Madrid would want for Varane. Diario AS reported recently that the Mancunians would prefer a part exchange deal including Paul Pogba. The French midfielder is open to the idea, those in his close circle have told AS but Madrid are clear about their own needs - they need to inject money into the club coffers before they can even start thinking about adding another top earner to their squad (Pogba  earns 12 million euros net at United).

Haaland on hold

Someone else who could be affected by Jadon Sancho's move is Erling Haaland. The Bundesliga club will be even more determined to ensure that Haaland stays put. That wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing for Real Madrid, as next summer, the agreement between Mino Raiola and Dortmund to let the player leave for a reasonable price would come into effect. If they were to sell him this summer, Dortmund would be looking for around 200 million euros for Haaland.

The summer of 2022 could be definitive for Madrid. If they are unable to sign Mbappé this summer because PSG refuse to negotiate, the striker would be able to join on a free transfer (if he doesn't renew) next year. In the meantime, Madrid can wait and make a bid for Haaland next summer. Two possible marquee signings just in time for the reopening of the new Bernabéu for the start of the 2022/23 season...
