Things can never be taken for granted in the knock-out phases and that's what Switzerland proved against neighbors France: they were losing 3-1 to the world champions with less than 15 minutes to go but managed to come back thanks to goals from Haris Seferovic and Mario Gavranovic, which forced extra time and penalties.
Switzerland, who played the quarter-finals of the World Cup in 1934, 1938 and 1954, have reached the quarter-finals of the European Championship for the first time in their history. Now they will try to make more history in the tournament, although they have only won one of their last 22 games against Spain, suffering 16 defeats.
Spain’s game against Croatia followed a similar pattern over 90 minutes. Luis Enrique’s men were comfortably leading 3-1 until Croatia scored twice late on to bring the game to extra time. Luckily for La Roja, Álvaro Morata and Mikel Oyarzabal scored during the extra 30 minutes to secure the win.
Spain are looking to lift the European Championship title for the fourth time to overtake Germany, who also have three trophies. Luis Enrique will probably be aware that his side have lost five of their previous eight quarter-finals in this competition, but each time they have gone through this round, they have won the trophy.
