Who is the all-time leading scorer for the US national basketball team at the Olympics?
Team USA's men’s basketball begin their Olympic campaign against France on Sunday. The all-time points record will likely be reset in Tokyo.
Team USA's men’s basketball get their Olympic campaign underway by taking on France in the first Group A game at Saitama Super Arena on Sunday. The US all-time Olympic points record could well change hands in Tokyo - a record which has stood since the last Games in Rio de Janeiro.
Carmelo Anthony's Olympic figures
Carmelo Anthony possesses a number of US Olympic records - he is the player to have won the most medals (three golds, one bronze), to have scored the most points in one game (37, against Nigeria at London 2012), the most three-point field goals in one match (10, against Nigeria) and he also tops the leaderboard for the most points overall at the Olympics Games.
Anthony has starred in four summer Games, he was just 20 years old when he was included in the USA team taking part at the 2004 Games in Athens. He played in seven of the team’s eight games at the tournament, finishing with an average of 2.4 points and 1.6 rebounds per game as Team USA overcame Lithuania to collect the bronze medal.
Gold in 2008, 2012 and 2016
By the time of the Beijing Olympics in 2008, Anthony, along with fellow 2003 draftees LeBron James and Dwyane Wade, was an established member of the side. He hit 13 points in the final against Spain to win his first Olympic gold. He followed that up by repeating the feat in London 2012 and again in Rio four years later.
In four Olympic Games, Carmelo Anthony amassed a total of 336 points. But his record could be history by the end of the week. Kevin Durant is just 25 points behind on 311 points - during 2021, Durant has been averaging 26.9 points per game, which suggests Anthony’s Olympic record could go either against France tonight or if not, in the second group game against Iran on Wednesday. A third chance, if he needs it, will come against the Czech Republic on Saturday but as the defending champions, Team USA are favourites to win the gold medal, so Durant could likely have six games to snatch Anthony’s four-year-old record.
