Mexico failed to find the back of the net

The Mexican national team was more dangerous throughout 120 minutes and they missed several chances to take the lead. In the 12th minute Rogelio Funes Mori headed the ball and the USMNT goalkeeper made a superb save.

The United States would respond in the 27th minute after they forced a turnover in Mexico’s end and the ball found its way to Paul Arriola and his shot hit the post. Then Funes tried again in the 30th minute and he was very close to scoring the first goal of the match after a close-range shot that was blocked once again by Matt Turner.

In the second half Orbelín Pineda missed big time inside the sixth. ‘Chaka’ Rodríguez made a perfect cross inside the box for Pineda, but he took a bad touch and the ball went wide. A few minutes later Pineda would try again and his shot went over Turner’s crossbar. It was not Mexico’s night at Allegiant Stadium.

Late hero for the USMNT

Both teams failed to score after 90 minutes and they would head into extra time. There was little action in the first 15 minutes, but in the second half the United States would see the light at the end of the tunnel. In the 117th minute Miles Robinson would head the ball from a set piece and score the winning goal for the USMNT.

With his goal the United States defeated the Mexican national team to win their seventh trophy in the competition. This is the second final that the United States men’s national team have won this summer against Mexico. They will see each other again in September in World Cup qualifying.
