Karim Benzema has renewed his contract with Real Madrid until 30 June 2023. As this newspaper reported a few days ago, the Frenchman had already agreed to extend his stay at the club and today it has been confirmed. The Lyon native has signed a new deal until 2023, with his previous contract expiring in 2022. The most remarkable part of the renewal is the release clause, which according to L'Équipe, is set at €1 billion for any team wishing to purchase the forward.

Benzema extension never in doubt

Everything indicated that Benzema was going to renew his contract with Madrid months ago. The Frenchman told his agent that he trusted both the team and club president Florentino Pérez, so the renewal has been straightforward. The striker himself had already announced his desire to renew last season. "If the president wants me to extend, my door is open," Benzema said at the Champions League round of 16 second leg against Atalanta.

Benzema becomes the sixth player to renew for Madrid in 2021. He joins Luka Modric, Nacho, Dani Carvajal, Lucas Vázquez and Thibaut Courtois who have all renewed this year. Madrid now have more than half of the squad under contract beyond 2023. Marcelo, Isco, Gareth Bale and Modric (who renewed for a year) end their contracts in 2022. Whether Real Madrid decide to renew these players or release them will be decided later on in the season.

Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti saw Benzema prove his value to the team with two goals in the 4-1 season-opening LaLiga win away to Deportivo Alavés last weekend.
