Tokyo 2020 Medals

The medals for the Tokyo Paralympic Games were revealed in 2019, before the global pandemic. The Paralympic medals are not always made of the same material as the Olympic medals, nor do they have the same design. For example the Paralympic medals have braille observed on the side of the medal.

The Paralympics committee released the details of the medals in a press release, stating:

The design is centered around the motif of a traditional Japanese fan, depicting the Paralympic Games as the source of a fresh new wind refreshing the world as well as a shared experience connecting diverse hearts and minds. The kaname, or pivot point, holds all parts of the fan together; here it represents Para athletes bringing people together regardless of nationality or ethnicity. Motifs on the leaves of the fan depict the vitality of people’s hearts and symbolize Japan’s captivating and life-giving natural environment in the form of rocks, flowers, wood, leaves, and water. These are applied with a variety of techniques, producing a textured surface that makes the medals compelling to touch.

Which athlete has won the most Paralympic medals?

Trischa Zorn-Hudson is the most decorated Paralympian. She has participated in seven Paralympics throughout her athletic career, and has won 55 medals. 44 of medals won were gold, 9 were silver, and 5 were bronze.

Maria Scutti from Italy has also won a significant amount of medals. At the 1960 Paralympics in Rome, Scutti won eleven medals. Nine of these eleven medals were gold medals.
