Will there be a season 6 of Money Heist?
The new season of La Casa de Papel was released on Netflix on Friday and many are already asking if this will be the last chapter of the Professor's story.
The first volume of the fifth season of the critically acclaimed Money Heist was released on Netflix on Friday, 3 September. The Spanish crime drama has drawn a dedicated following around the world and the first five episodes of season 5 will be followed by the second five, volume two, on Friday, 3 December.
There has been huge anticipation ahead of the long-awaited release and a documentary entitled Money Heist: The Phenomenon came out last year exploring its huge popularity.
But unfortunately for fans of the Professor and his gang of unlikely bank robbers, it seems like season 5 will be the final instalment of the show. Netflix’s promotional content in the build up to season 5’s release has made clear that this is the end of the story, announcing: “THE HEIST COMES TO AN END”
Speaking about what to expect from the new series, executive producer Alex Pina said: “The result is the fifth part of La Casa de Papel. The war reaches its most extreme and savage levels, but it is also the most epic and exciting season.”
Creator hints at Money Heist spin-offs in the future
In the course of the first four seasons, Money Heist became the most watched non-English language show in Netflix. It has gained more than 65 million viewers over the course of that time, along with an Emmy Award for Best Drama.
With such massive popularity it would seem strange to let the show die entirely, and there are already rumours of future versions Money Heist. In November 2020 it was confirmed that a Korean version of Money Heist was already in the works.
Speaking about the 12-episode Korean adaptation, Pina said: “I find it fascinating that the world of ‘La Casa de Papel’ is so attractive to Korean creators as to do an adaptation. The fact that the action is set on the Korean Peninsula also seems to me to be a milestone which I am really delighted about.”
There is also the potential for spin-off shows in Spanish, following the lives of one or more of the myriad characters who have become so iconic over the past four year. Given the eclectic and fascinating nature of the Professor’s crew, executive producer Jesus Colmenar said any future versions would have to be based around a secondary character from the show.
He said: "Would I do a spin-off of The Professor? Maybe, but it's already in Money Heist. I mean: his story, his reasons, his why… is already going to be told in Money Heist. Spin-offs (work) of a very secondary character who attracts a lot of attention work, and you can create a new series based on their story.”
Pina reiterated Colmenar’s thoughts, saying: "When you make a spin-off, it has to be about a totally different universe, and you have to put the focus elsewhere.
“On the one hand, you could make a spin-off of every character in Money Heist because they all have enough for a series, but at the same time I think that Money Heist already tells their stories."
