Costa Rica vs Mexico: how and where to watch - times, TV, online

Mexico travel to San Jose looking to improve on their winning start to the 'octagon' group with a ticket to the Qatar 2022 World Cup on the line.

Costa Rica-Mexico

Costa Rica welcome Mexico this Sunday in match-day 2 of the CONCACAF octagonal group final with places in the Qatar World Cup on the line.

Costa Rica started their campaign with a disappointing 0-0 stalemate against Panama on Thursday and will relish the visit of Tata Martino's men to show the fans at the Estadio Nacional that they are serious candidates to secure one of the three automatic qualifying places.

The Ticos display against Panama however was hugely with just three wins in their past 17 games and they came against lesser opposition in the form of Suriname, Guadeloupe and Jamaica in the 2021 Gold Cup.

"We have a big test on Sunday at home and we need to change our mindset. We are aware that there is room for improvement," said captain Celso Borges, speaking to the media ahead of the match.

Mexico confident

'El Tri' needed a late goal to defeat Jamaica in their opening game, they were clearly the dominant side and spurned many clear-cut chances to put the game beyond the 'Reggae Boyz' from the Caribbean. The win saw Mexico top the group with all other games ending in draws.

"The way we understand things is that that the team should play to win. We would never play for a draw" said head coach Gerardo Martino.

The Argentine won't be on the Mexican bench tonight after he underwent surgery for a retinal detachment on Friday which prevents him from traveling.

3,000 fans to be present

Tonight's game in San Jose will be watched by just 3,000 fans with local health authorities only permitting 5% of the overall capacity as part on ongoing coronavirus measures in the Central American nation.
