Real Madrid: Dortmund could cancel Reinier loan deal

'Bild' report that Borussia Dortmund are considering cancelling Reinier's loan in January if his form doesn't improve. He is under contract at Madrid until 2026.

Update:
Real Madrid: Dortmund could cancel Reinier loan deal

There is concern at Borussia Dortmund about Reinier. Doubts about the teenager's loan move from Real Madrid started to surface almost from the moment he arrived in the Bundesliga last season. Firstly for the lack of opportunities the player has been getting while he is adapting to the European game. And secondly, because he hasn't seized the opportunities  when he has been given game time. That is a good enough reason for Dortmund to contemplate ending Reinier's loan ahead of time, if there is no improvement over the next four months, German daily Bild reports.

Those reports add that the club has set a time limit to decide what to do with the attacking midfielder. Reinier's loan deal expires in June next year but Dortmund could cancel it in the winter transfer window if the situation remains as it is now. This season, the Brazilian has played a total of six minutes during the DFL-Super Cup final against Bayern. In the Bundesliga, he was not in the list for the opening game of the season and spent the next two games on the subs' bench. Those numbers are worrying, as is his market value which continues to plummet - from the 25 million euros which Transfermarkt valued him at while he was at Flamengo, to just 16 million now...

A loan spell which hasn't yielded results

In the summer of 2020, Reinier and Real Madrid elected Borussia Dortmund for the player spend time developing on loan because the German club put forward an attractive offer - a two-year loan playing in a team which had qualified for the Champions League and which was a contender for all of the domestic competitions. Madrid made a significant investment in Reinier (paying 30 million euros for him) and saw the Bundesliga and Borussia Dortmund as the perfect environment for a young Brazilian player to learn the ropes and get to grips with European football. The 19-year-old's brief spell with Castilla had been interrupted by the pandemic. As it turned out, instead of seeing an improvement in his game, it was the opposite for Reinier in Germany. Last season was a difficult one for him - he played a total of just 339 minutes, with one goal and one assist; Madrid hope he can register respectable figures this season.

For now, Reinier has received more praise from his coach than playing time. “We all know how good he is,” Marco Rose said on 13 August when asked about the player's fitness after winning the gold medal with Brazil at the summer Olympics. Reinier meanwhile, is as optimistic and ambitious as he was before going out on loan. “I am hoping to play more this season and I am training hard to be able to play. I work out every day at home. I want to make, score goals, create goals... everything," the player said in Tokyo. But up until now, he has just six minutes on-field and Borussia Dortmund will break off the loan and show Reinier the door if he doesn't come good…
