What next for Marcus Rashford and Barcelona? The short-term loan from Manchester United has just a handful of league games remaining but the Englishman is yet to fully convince the Barcelona hierarchy that he is deserving of a permanent move.

Unlike what happened during Raphinha’s previous injury, Rashford has not managed to make himself a guaranteed starter in the Brazilian’s absence. Gavi and Fermín are currently ahead of him in the pecking order, leaving the English striker with little time to convince Hansi Flick that he deserves more opportunities.

Rashford’s loan to Barcelona expires on June 30th and if the Catalan club does not exercise its €30 million purchase option, he will have to return to Manchester. His intention, reports suggest, is to stay at Barça and he continues to fight to make that happen. The Catalan club has not yet made a final decision on the matter.

Rashford goals could convince Barça

On Sunday, against Getafe, Rashford once again demonstrated that he can be a very useful player for Hansi Flick. He sealed the match with a beautiful counter-attacking goal after receiving a pass from Robert Lewandowski.

In his first season in La Liga, the Englishman’s numbers are more than acceptable. Rashford has contributed to 25 goals, scoring 12 and providing 13 assists. Only Lamine Yamal (36) and Fermín (28) have contributed to more goals for Barcelona. Across the entire league, only Kylian Mbappé (36) and Vinicius (26) have more. Looking back at the first seasons of some of Barça’s recent signings, Rashford’s goal contributions are comparable to those of Neymar (29), Cesc Fabregas (35), David Villa (34), Zlatan Ibrahimovic (32) and Thierry Henry (31).

Furthermore, Rashford’s 2025/26 numbers surpass those of compatriots Michael Owen, David Beckham, Steve McManaman and Gary Lineker in their debut seasons in Spain. The Englishman with a better return in his first LaLiga campaign is Jude Bellingham, who put up 35 goal contributions in 2023/24.
