Cape Verde vs Nigeria: how and where to watch - times, TV, online
All the information you need on how to watch the 2022 World Cup qualifier between Cape Verde and Nigeria in Mindelo on Tuesday 7 September.
Nigeria are looking to qualify for their fourth consecutive appearance at the World Cup finals, their sixth in total. The Super Eagles have established themselves as one of the more familiar African sides at The World Cup, unlike their rivals Cape Verde who have never qualified for the event. But the Blue Sharks have witnessed a significant progression in recent years as the team has qualified for three out of the last five editions of the Africa Cup of Nations.
Both teams remain unbeaten
Cape Verde took a point from their opening qualifier against Central African Republic on 1 September. Júlio Tavares had given them an early lead but Tresór Toropité pulled one back as it ended 1-1 in Douala.
Nigeria got their 2022 World Cup campaign off to an encouraging start by beating Liberia 2-0 in their first qualifying match in Lagos last week. Kelechi Iheanacho grabbed both goals on the day, with the result putting the team top of Group C.
Cape Verde and Nigeria have met just once before, they played out a goalless draw in a friendly back in January 2013 but this is the first time they have met in official competition.
Cape Verde vs Nigeria: latest squad news
Cape Verde coach Bubista has called up 26 players for this month’s qualifiers, all of his players are injury and suspension-free going into Tuesday’s match. Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr was forced to take a slimmed-down squad to Mindelo - just 21 players made the trip. Iheanacho, Alex Iwobi, Oghenekaro Etebo, Wilfred Ndidi and Joseph Ayodele-Aribo have all returned back to the UK in compliance with the UK government’s travel restrictions. Premier League clubs agreed not to release their players for international games played in countries which are on the red travel list, which includes Cape Verde. That means that there could be opportunities for some of the upcoming players such as Boavista defender Chidozie Awaziem, right-back Tyronne Ebuehi or the two new faces in the squad, midfielders Kingsley Michael and Innocent Bonke, who both could be handed their debuts.
