The new NFL season gets underway on Thursday (9 September) as Dallas Cowboys face Super Bowl Champions Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Florida. This season features a new 17-game schedule, with every team playing once a week and the classic Super Bowl taking place in Los Angeles a week later than usual, on 13 February 2022.

Thursday's season opener - which we're bringing you live - at the Raymond James Stadium between the Cowboys and the Buccaneers kick-starts what promises to be an exciting new NFL season.

Cowboys....sports richest franchise

For a sixth consecutive year, the Dallas Cowboys topped the prestigious annual Forbes 'World's most Valuable Sports Teams' listing with the Texans sports business having a value of 5.7 billion dollars. The NFL team share the podium with two New York based franchises with MLB's NY Yankees in second place with a value of 5.2 billion dollars ahead of NBA's Knicks with the basketball team having a 5 billion dollar value.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones paid $150 million to buy the franchise from owner Bum Bright in 1989  and in the space of just five years, has seen the value of the franchise increase by 43%.

The source of such wealth is cited to the team playing regularly on Sundays which generates substantial 'game-day' revenue with TV networks paying over 250 million dollars for broadcast rights. 100 million dollars alone also come into the business from premium seating at the AT&T branded 80,000 capacity stadium.

Cowboys rich-list rivals

In terms of closest NFL rich rivals, the New England Patriots are the second placed franchise in the rich listing with the Robert Kraft owned team having a current value of 4.4 billion dollars, closely followed by the NY Giants.

In the world of US Sports, being rich is no guarantee for on-field success with the last Dallas Cowboys Super Bowl win coming back in 1996 despite the Texans being a regular fixture in the annual NFL play-offs.
