The world no. 1 has had to fight his way to the final, losing the opening set in his last three matches before bouncing back each time to win, the latest victory coming against fourth seed Alexander Zverev in the semi-final.

Djokovic set to make tennis history

A win for the Serbian would make him only the third man to complete a calendar Grand Slam. He has already won the Australian Open, the French Open, and Wimbledon this year.

He would also surpass the record number of 20 Grand Slam singles titles of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

25-year-old Medvedev is looking to seal his first major title in his third Grand Slam final.

Djokovic-Medvedev head to head

Taking a look at their past matches, Djokovic won five of their eight encounters, with the 2021 Australian Open being the most recent.

Djokovic wants to end this year’s run in Flushing Meadows in a totally different way from last year. He left the US Open in disgrace then, getting kicked out of the tournament after accidentally hitting a line judge in the throat with a tennis ball that he angrily slammed.

Djokovic missed his chance at a Golden Slam when he failed to win the gold at the Tokyo Olympics, but now has the opportunity to join the ranks of Don Budge (1938) and Rod Laver (1962 and 1969) who are the only men to have swept the Grand Slam events in one year.
