It was a long time coming, but after a year long wait wait the Las Vegas Raiders fans were treated to an instant classic in their debut in Allegiant Stadium, otherwise known as “The Death Star.” The Raiders took their first lead of the night on the last play of the game as Las Vegas beat the Baltimore Ravens 33-27.

Fans finally fill stadium in Las Vegas

After an empty 2020 season, both in the stands and in terms of their playoff hopes, the Las Vegas Raiders had a “re-debut” as 65,000 fans filled the two billion dollar stadium in Sin City. Last year the Raiders were forced to play in a brand new city, in a brand new stadium with no one inside.

Tonight the Raiders paid the fans back with night for the ages winning in walk off fashion in on of the wildest overtime periods ever seen.

Ravens and Jackson out to the early lead

The Ravens came out early and dominated, thanks to some phenomenal play from Lamar Jackson. The opening touchdown of the game came on fourth and one when Ty’son Williams took a 31 yard run up the middle to the house to put the first points on the board.

Jackson then doubled the lead with one of the most brilliant bits scrambling we have ever seen from the former NFL MVP. The throw found Marquise Brown in the end zone and the Ravens seemed to be cruising.

Carr started cold, caught fire late

The Raiders, and especially Derek Carr, were having trouble moving the ball in the first quarter. Carr went a series of seven consecutive passes with out a completion, but 10 play drive capped off by Josh Jacobs’ 2 yard run gave the Raiders fans their first taste of a touchdown in their new stadium.

Jacobs then tied the game up in the third quarter after Lamar Jackson’s first of two fumbles on the night gave Las Vegas the ball around midfield. The Raider’s running back weaved through the defense for the 15 yard touchdown to tie the game at 17 a piece.

Hello everyone and Welcome to Las Vegas for the final kickoff of opening weekend in the NFL. The Raiders will look to start their season off on the right foot against a battered Ravens side

It’s the Raiders and the Ravens, in a Monday night showdown in Vegas, baby Vegas! AS English will be keeping you up to date with live coverage, scores, stats and highlights from the second ever Monday night showdown from Las Vegas’ Allegiant Stadium, also know as “The Death Star.”

The Raiders are looking to get back to the playoffs for the first time in five seasons. The AFC West has been dominated by the Kansas City Chiefs in recent years, and the Raiders 8-8 record in 2020 wasn’t enough to get them to the post season. Quarterback Derek Carr and head coach John Gruden will be looking to take the the Vegas franchise to the post season for the first time.

The Ravens have been one of the perennial powers not just in their division, but a constant Super Bowl contender since quarterback Lamar Jackson took the reigns since the 2018 season. Last year they came in second beind the Steelers in the AFC North, going 11-5 and reaching the divisional round of the playoffs, before being knocked out be the Buffalo Bills.

Lamar Jackson and the Ravens were expected to be make another run deep into the playoffs but preseason injuries have depleted their roster, in a very competitive AFC North, their playoff chances have plummeted.

Baltimore is one of, if not the most injury plagued team coming into the regular season. Running back Gus Edwards and cornerback Marcus Peters were both placed on the injured reserve list after tearing their ACL’s in back-to-back plays in practice this week. Edwards was primed to take over the starting running back role after J.K Dobbins tore his ACL this preseason. Linebacker L.J. Fort also tore his ACL earlier in the preaseon, and rookie reliever Rashod Bateman had surgery on an injured groin in the weeks leading up to Week 1.

Lamar Jackson does plenty of running for Baltimore, but they will have to rely on Ty’son Williams, Latavius Murray and Trenton Cannon this week before they dip into the free agent market in the weeks to come.

The Raiders have struggled on the offensive end, and Derek Carr has been the victim of a lack of weapons to target over the last few years. That means Las Vegas will have to rely plenty on the run, which could be trouble against the Ravens sixth ranked rush defense last year.

The brunt of the rushing duties will be placed on the shoulders of Josh Jacobs and Kenyan Drake, but Las Vegas will need more production from guys like wide receivers Bryan Edwards and Hunter Renfrow.

The game kicks off at 8:20 from Las Vegas, Nevada from “The Death Star.”
