In the days leading up to the NFL’s highlight game of Week 2, Lamar Jackson told reporters there is much more to Sunday night’s primetime showdown between the Kansas City Chiefs vs. Baltimore Ravens game, than a battle of the quarterbacks.

Jackson seeking first win against Mahomes and Chiefs

While that may be the case, media outlets preparing for the headline matchup of the weekend will be keen to remind Jackson that he is winless against the former Super Bowl winning quarterback.

The 2019 NFL MVP is 0-3 against Mahomes and the Chiefs, suffering defeat in each of the three previous meetings between the teams over the last three seasons. That is by far his worst record against any opposing team or quarterback, given that his record against the rest of the NFL is 30-5.

According to ESPN’s Stats and Information research, it’s only the fifth time in the last 25 years that an MVP quarterback dropped his first three games against an opposing MVP quarterback.

Mahomes and Jackson won NFL MVP in back-to-back years

"It's not about me and Mahomes," Jackson said after Wednesday's practice. "Not to me, probably to everyone else. But it's the Ravens versus the Kansas City Chiefs."

Mahomes and Jackson won league MVP honors in consecutive years, with Mahomes taking the Associated Press MVP award in 2018, while Jackson took the honors the following year. Jackson became the second ever unanimous pick

Only two other MVP quarterbacks have lost their first four match ups against another MVP quarterback. Peyton Manning and Matt Ryan both failed to defeat Tom Brady and the New England Patriots while they were in the midst of their dynasty years.

Three Chiefs defeats are "in the past" say Jackson

Jackson was quick to dismiss recent history against Mahomes and the Chiefs, "They did beat us three times or whatever, but that's in the past," Jackson said Wednesday. "I'm not dwelling on those losses. We're coming in Sunday night and we're going to play."

The Ravens dual threat QB called the Chiefs Baltimore’s “kryptonite” after last year’s 34-20 loss where Jackson had a career low 97 passing yards.

Jackson and Ryan will face their "kryptonites" this weekend

In three career games against the Chiefs Jackson has completed just 52.6% of his passes averaging 170 yards passing and just three total touchdowns.

In the other 35 games Jackson has played against other opponents, he completes 65.3% of his passes, and averages 192 yards passing with a combined 65 TDs.

Jackson joins Matt Ryan as the MVP quarterbacks with the worst win percentage against an opposing MVP quarterback with at least three tries against that opponent. Jackson is 0-3 against Mahomes, and Ryan is 0-5 against Brady. Both will face off against their “kryptonites” this weekend as the Atlanta Falcons take on Brady’s Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Bucs.
