Tampa Bay Buccaneers 24 vs 34 Los Angeles Rams summary: score, stats, and highlights | NFL Week 3
The Los Angeles Rams knocked off the reigning Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers to stay undefeated on the season. Matt Stafford started slow but caught fire in the final three quarters to lead the Rams to the 34-24 win.
Spotlight on LA for Week 3 game of the week
It was the showcase game of Week 3 in the NFL, and a potential preview to the NFC Championship game in three months time. The hype surrounding this game during the week was equal to that of a playoff game so too was the atmosphere inside SoFi Stadium Sunday afternoon.
It was two of the highest powered offenses squaring up against each other, and plenty of fireworks were expected. The first quarter gave us anything but that. Both teams started their opening possessions swapping three-and-outs and the first five series of the game ended with a punt.
The offenses kicked into gear in the second quarter when Matthew Stafford orchestrated a fourteen play, 95 yard touchdown drive capped off by Tyler Higbee catch and run for a touchdown. It just took that first score to blow the lid off the game.
Scoring picked up in second quarter
The offenses opened up, and the game finally started to give us what we all expected coming into this weekend. Brady and the Bucs answered right back with a touchdown drive finished off by Chris Godwin’s first ever rushing touchdown.
Stafford had one more crack at scoring before the halftime break, which he took full advantage of. Cooper Kupp, who has quickly become Staffords favorite target caught a two yard touchdown pass with 51 seconds to go in the half to give the rams the lead going into the break.
Coach Sean McVay came it Sunday 39-0 when going to halftime with a lead. That record improved to 40-0 by days end.
Stafford to Jackson for 75 yard TD to start 3rd
The Rams exploded in the third quarter, scoring 17 points, including the 75 yard bomb from Stafford to Desean Jackson to stretch the lead to 21-7 a minute into the second half.
Brady scored on a QB sneak just four minutes later to tighten the score midway through the 3rd quarter, but another rapid fire possession from the Rams was stretched the lead back to 14 just two minutes later.
The LA defense took over from there, continuously pressuring Tom Brady. They allowed just one field goal, and a meaningless touchdown at the end of the game to close the gap to 34-24 with a minute to go in the game.
Brady has played in plenty of important games over his career, but this was one of Matt Stafford’s biggest games of his career. The hype surrounding the champions coming to town. The speculation that the Rams could be a contender out of the NFC, and what did Stafford do?
He threw for 343 yards and four touchdowns after starting the game 1/6. He found Desean Jackson on three of his 27 completions for 120 yards including the 75 yard TD run.
Brady threw for 432 yards, but spent the whole game chasing Stafford and the Rams. He didn’t get much help from his run game either. He was the leading rusher of the night with 14 yards.
It’s still very early in the season, and a there is a whole lot of time between now and the playoffs. But Los Angeles made a big statement on Sunday, not just by winning but by dominating the Buccaneers.

Hello everyone and welcome to Sofi Stadium, where the Ram will take on the Bucs in the highlight game of Week 3 of the NFL
It’s a battle of undefeated in La La Land. The reigning Super Bowl champions make the cross country trip to visit the new look Los Angeles Rams. AS English will be providing live coverage, updates, stats and scores from Sunday afternoon’s showcase match up from SoFi Stadium.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers picked up right where they left off last years. They returned all 22 starters from last years title winning team, and were the obvious choice for favorites in the NFC leading up to this season.
Two games in to the season, and they haven’t done anything that would make you question their chances to get to the conference championship and beyond.
The Bucs opened the season with a tight 31-29 win over the Dallas Cowboys on the opening night of the NFL season. It took yet another game-winning fourth quarter drive by Tampa Bay quarterback to beat the Cowboys and their recently returned quarterback Dak Prescott.
Tampa returned to Raymond James Stadium last week, and crushed the Atlanta Falcons. It was another strong finish for Brady and the Bucs who scored 20 points in the final quarter. Brady threw for 276 yards and five touchdowns and remains undefeated against Matt Ryan in his career.
Matt Stafford has had a rebirth in Los Angeles, after over a decade in Detroit. The Rams offseason signing looks to be paying off, at least in the first couple weeks of the regular season.
The 2012 Comeback Player of the Year threw for 321 yards and 3 touchdowns completing 20 of his 26 attempts in the Los Angeles’ 34-14 stomping of the Chicago Bears.
The Chargers next game against the Colts was much tighter. The Indianapolis Colts made them sweat until the end, but Carson Wentz’s injury late in the game hurt the home team and the Rams held off the Colts with an interception on Indy’s last offensive play of the game.
Stafford was less efficient, going 19/30 with 278 yards and two touchdowns, but made big plays down the stretch to secure the win for his side.
Much like the rest of the NFL, the running backs for Los Angeles have yet to kickstart their season, and with leading rusher Darrell Henderson likely out for today’s game Stafford will have to be even better than he was in the first two games.
The one weakness the Patriots have is on the defensive side of the ball. They gave up a total of 54 points in their first two games, and are allowing over 350 yards passing to opposing quarterbacks.
On the offensive end, Antonio Brown will sit out today after being placed on the COVID/reserve list earlier this week. Brown had a huge game in Week 1 with 121 yards and a touchdown, but had just one reception for 17 yards last game. Brady will have plenty of options, but not having his deep threat could hinder the Bucs passing game.
It’s Stafford vs. Brady, Bucs vs Rams. Kickoff is set for 4:25 p.m. ET, from Raymond James Stadium.
