Kylian Mbappé explains his PSG plan for Real Madrid transfer
In an interview published in L'Équipe, the Paris Saint-Germain forward speaks openly about how his desired move to Los Blancos did not come to pass.
The advance of Kylian Mbappé's interview with RMC Sport (which comes out in its entirety on Tuesday evening) has rocked a few boats in Paris. The PSG forward also spoke with French national L'Équipe, and reiterates his version of events about his frustrated departure desire in the summer.
Mbappe wanted to leave PSG in the summer
“At the beginning, I asked for some time to reflect," Mbappé said when asked about the sitiation. "Before Euro 2020, I told the club that I didn’t want to renew, and after I said I wanted to leave. My objective was really for everyone to move forward together - the selling club, the buying club and me - and that we worked out the best deal possible. I also wanted to give my club enough time to find a replacement for me. Everyone would be happy.
“But the club decided not to sell me, and I was OK with that. I kept playing for the entire month of August and was performing well. I don’t have a problem. I’m still at a huge club and in a place where I’ve been happy for four years.”
The French star was also asked about potentially kicking up a fuss like other players have done in the past to force through a move.

“That would have been ungrateful and wouldn’t have been appreciative towards a club that welcomed me in at the age of 18, one that has given me loads over four years. I always want to play and show that I’m a top player, that nothing fazes me - even a failed transfer - and that I can be the difference right until the end. I don’t make impulse decisions. I thought long and hard about it.
“At the time, I was a bit [disappointed]. When your goal is to leave and you end up staying, you’re not pleased about it. But I quickly moved on from it. Unfortunately I got injured while away on international duty but it didn’t take me long to get back. And then I scored and I was in good form once again.”
Mbappé's Real Madrid focus
While staying firm on his attachment with the Ligue 1 club, Mbappé also clarified something that we have been reporting for some time.
"I am connected to Paris. But if I had left in the summer it would have only been for Real Madrid."
