Wu Lei and Benzema, most popular LaLiga stars in La Palma shirt auction
The Espanyol and China forward generated over 4,400 euro from the sale of three matchworn shirts used by the player in the recent game against Cádiz.
LaLiga recently launched a charity auction in collaboration with all LaLiga Santander and LaLiga SmartBank sides in auctioning match-worn shirts with all money raised set to go to the Cabildo de La Palma – the Island Council of La Palma – to cover the medium and long term needs of those affected by the eruption of the volcano on the island.
The action will consist of a virtual charity auction through the MatchWornShirt platform, which has extensive experience in this type of solidarity initiatives, having worked with more than 160 football clubs throughout Europe. The shirts were used by clubs in both divisions in recent games with the auction now having closed.
Wu Lei, highest generator
Espanyol alone generated 8,328 euro for the cause with 4,450 alone being generated by the Chinese striker albeit via three different shirts the 29-year-old wore in the game against Cádiz with each shirt selling in China for 2,200, 1,450 and 800 euro respectively. The next highest generating Espanyol shirt was that of center forward Raul de Tomas who saw his match-worn shirt sell for 414 euro.
Karim Benzema saw the highest selling individual shirt with 4,200 euro being generated from the sale for his shirt that saw action in the 0-0 draw against Osasuna at the Santiago Bernabéu. Barcelona's Frenkie de Jong was the most of the FC Barcelona shirts with the Dutch central player's shirt from the game against Valencia CF being auctioned for 2,750 euros.
