Has Canelo Alvarez ever been knocked down?
The lone loss of Canelo Alvarez’s career came on September 14, 2013 against the one and only Floyd Mayweather at the MGM Grand Arena in Vegas.
Also known as “Saúl” 31-year-old Canelo Alvarez is a super middleweight world champion, who has held the WBA (Super), WBC, Ring magazine titles since 2020, and the WBO title since May 2021.
He has won multiple world championships in four weight classes from light middleweight to light heavyweight, including unified titles in three of those weight classes.
Throughout his 16-year-long boxing career, the Mexican has only had one loss: to Floyd Mayweather, "Money".
Alvarez vs Mayweather
The lone loss of Alvarez’s career came on Sep. 14, 2013 against “Fighter of the Decade” in front of a sold out crowd of 16,746.
The two masters were undefeated when they met inside the ring at the MGM Grand Arena, but the 50-0 Mayweather knocked Alvarez down to his first career drop ever.
Mayweather came in with a perfect 44-0 record and young Alvarez punched with enough power to win any boxer in the ring, just not “Money”.
The pound-for-pound champ was so quick in the ring that there was no way Alvarez could've kept up with him; Mayweather connected 232 of his 505 punches on Alvarez. The Mexican could only land 117 of his 526 punches and was taken down by a three-punch combo in the seventh round that cost him the WBC and The Ring light middleweight titles.
Alvarez never fought a second time against Mayweather.
