Spain and Sweden go head-to-head in a 90-minute shoot-out for automatic qualification to the 2022 World Cup in Seville in a game that neither Luis Enrique or Janne Andersson will be relishing. Both sides have conspired to make life more difficult than it necessarily had to be in Group B: Sweden fluffed their lines in Georgia to miss out on the opportunity to go top and put the visitors in a position of only needing a point against Spain to seal the automatic qualifying placed while Spain will rue a limp 1-1 draw in Greece and defeat in Stockholm if they wind up in the playoffs.

Sweden's Ibrahimovic conundrum

Both Enrique and Andersson have faced their fair share of criticism, the Spain boss for largely overlooking Real Madrid in his selection process – a decision that is not entirely without merit given the form of Marco Asensio in particular – and his Sweden counterpart for recalling Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Opinion in Sweden on the value of the AC Milan striker is starkly divided, with some pundits of the opinion that he has unsettled a side functioning perfectly well without him. There is little doubt that Ibrahimovic remains a force on the pitch – he has scored 31 times in 55 games since rejoining Milan – and he is hardly a stranger to pressure situations but having just come back from injury the 40-year-old was a little off the pace against Georgia and whether to stick with the veteran or twist in Seville will be a key decision for Andersson.

Enrique on the other hand may envy his opposite number at least having the option. Spain have been fairly goal-shy, averaging two a game but massaging the overall stat with a 4-0 drubbing of Georgia, and the loss of their top scorer in qualifying, Ferran Torres, told in Athens as La Roja laboured to a 1-0 victory. That result did at least give Enrique a bit of breathing space – a draw will suffice against Sweden on Sunday – but given Spain’s tendency for collective defensive lapses in the absence of Sergio Ramos it won’t be a comfortable 90 minutes for the former Barcelona manager in Seville where Ibrahimovic will look to make a nuisance of himself to open up opportunities for Alexander Isak, who has matched Torres’ four goals in Group B, to apply a finishing touch.
