Atlas had an impressive run during the regular season of the Liga MX 2021 Apertura tournament, finishing in second place after 17 games. The Guadalajara-based side faced Monterrey in the quarter-final to advance to the next round and make a push for the championship this campaign.

Impressive run from Atlas

Against all odds, Atlas eliminated ‘Rayados’ in the two-legged tie to book their place in the next round. In the first leg the game ended in a scoreless draw, but Atlas held the advantage going into the second match because they finished in second place during the regular season.

In the second leg at the Estadio Jalisco, Julio Furch scored from the penalty spot in the 18th minute to give the home side a 1-0 lead. In the second half Monterrey spurred a response and in the 73rd minute Arturo González, a former Atlas player, equalized with plenty of time left on the clock.

Monterrey kept pushing, but they weren’t able to complete the turnaround and Atlas advanced to the semi finals after the 1-1 draw.

Atlas hasn’t won the league title since 1951 and this could be their year after an impressive run during the entire tournament. Atlas will now face Pumas UNAM in the semi-final with home advantage at the Jalisco stadium for the second leg.
