Should Barcelona draw in Munich, they will only qualify if Benfica fail to beat Dynamo Kiev. If Benfica beat Dynamo and Barcelona draw with Bayern, Benfica's superior head-to-head will see the side from Lisbon progress. If Benfica fail to win against Dynamo, Barcelona will qualify regardless of their own result.

What happens if Bayern beat Barça?

If Barcelona lose against Bayern and Benfica fail to beat Dynamo Kiev, then Barcelona will progress due to having a two-point advantage in Group E.

If Barça lose and Benfica win against Dynamo Kiev, then Benfica will qualify as runners-up and the Camp Nou outfit will head for the Europa League. If Both Barça and Benfica lose their games, then Barça will qualify due to their two-point advantage.

The last time Barça failed to qualify for the last 16

The last time Barcelona failed to advance to the knockout stages of the Champions League was in the 2000/01 season. The Catalan side finished third in their group behind AC Milan and Leeds United. It was a low point for the club and one which current boss Xavi will remember. The former midfielder was part of Llorenç Serra Ferrer's squad that season and featured in the last three group stage games. The last time that the Primera club were unable to qualify for the Champions League group stage was in 2003 as they finished in sixth-placed in LaLiga.

How much money could Barça lose for not progressing?

Not advancing to the Round of 16 of the Champions League would be a major blow to Barcelona, owing to their current financial situation. If they finish third in the group they would still remain in European competition, joining the Europa League at the Round of 32 stage, but the prize money is lower than that available in the Champions League.

If Barça are knocked out of the Champions League at the group stage, they stand to lose between €10.53 million and €15.2 million for not securing a place in the knockout round.
