Who is the owner of NYCFC?
New York City Football Club represents the Big Apple in Major League Soccer, but did you know that its owners have some hefty other teams too.
New York City Football Club, that features as a team in Major League Soccer, is owned by The City Football Group, a growing organisation that has acquired some massive sporting names across various nations.
NYCFC: part of a sporting family
Known affectionately by the fans as The Pigeons or The Boys in Blue, NYCFC triumphed in the 2021 Eastern Conference final over a covid-depleted Philadelphia Union. That saw them reach their first ever MLS Cup final where they will play Portland at Providence Park for the prestige title.
MLS news:
While the New York soccer team is well recognised in the United States, on a global scale their owners’ other acquisitions are likely to gain more attention. Take the club that has dominated the Premier League over recent years, Manchester City, led by the expert hand of Pep Guardiola, which is where the group derives its name. Another powerful brand in the same business family is also based in the Big Apple but swaps a rectangular pitch for a diamond. The New York Yankees comes under Yankee Global Enterprises, which is also owned by the City Group (CFG).
CFG is a holding company that primarily administers association football clubs, owning stakes in clubs in the United States, Australia, India, Japan, Spain, Uruguay, China, Belgium and France. The group is owned by three organisations; of which 78% is majority owned by the Abu Dhabi United Group, 10% by the American firm Silver Lake and 12% by Chinese firms China Media Capital and CITIC Capital.
As well as investing and growing the group in the men’s professional game, CFG has also delved into women’s football and also eSports, the latter of which saw NYCFC sign its first professional FIFA player in Christopher "NYC_Chris" Holly, who became the first FIFA player signed to represent a Major League Soccer club.
