The draw for the Champions League last 16 was held on Monday, with the original pairings voided following what UEFA described as a “technical problem” that saw Manchester United and Villarreal, who met in the group stage, included in the same pot, and then Liverpool added to the draw featuring Atlético (the two clubs were also in the same group) instead of United. When UEFA had finally rectified the situation, Atlético were paired with United, Villarreal with Juventus and Liverpool with Inter Milan, while Real Madrid were left to curse their luck after being drawn against PSG, having initially landed Benfica.

While UEFA’s faux pas was fuel to the flames of those clubs still holding out hope of setting up a breakaway European Super League, the governing body was able to lay out the dates for the last 16 encounters without any further issues. These will take place between 15 February and 16 March, with the first leg ties to be played on 15, 16, 22 and 23 February and the reverse fixtures on 8, 9, 15 and 16 March.

Red Bull Salzburg vs Bayern Munich: 16 February / 8 March

Sporting Lisbon vs Manchester City: 15 February / 9 March

Benfica vs Ajax: 23 February / 15 March

Chelsea vs Lille: 22 February / 16 March

Atlético Madrid vs Manchester United: 23 February / 15 March

Villarreal vs Juventus: 22 February / 16 March

Inter Milan vs Liverpool: 16 February / 8 March

PSG vs Real Madrid: 15 February / 9 March

Champions League quarter-final draw

When the last 16 ties have been concluded, the draw for the quarter-finals will take place in 18 March, 2022, with the opening legs of those ties being played on 5 and 6 April, 2022, and the reverse fixtures taking place on 12 and 13 April.

Also on March 18, 2022, the draw for the semi-finals will be held, giving those clubs left in the mix an idea of their potential route to the final. Those games will be played on 26 and 27 April, 2022, with the second legs scheduled for 3 and 4 May.

The final will be played at the Krestovsky Stadium in Saint Petersburg on 28 May, 2022. As well as the quarter-final and semi-final draws on 18 March, a separate draw will be staged to decide the “home team” for the final.
