Urban Mayer has been sacked as Jacksonville Jaguars head coach after only 13 games in charge ending a tumultuous tenure.

Mayer's dismissal was confirmed by Jaguars owner Shad Khan on Wednesday with the side sitting 2-11 on a five-game skid and in bottom spot in the AFC South.

The former Ohio State head coach's brief time in charge as the Jaguars, having been hired in January, was riddled with issues, including a video surfacing showing a woman dancing close to him in Ohio in October.

Last week there were reports of tension between Mayer and the Jaguars players and coaches, including the latest on Wednesday claiming that former kicker Josh Lambo alleged the head coach had kicked him in the leg while stretching in warm-ups prior to a practice, which was the final straw for Khan.

"After deliberation over many weeks and a thorough analysis of the entirety of Urban's tenure with our team, I am bitterly disappointed to arrive at the conclusion that an immediate change is imperative for everyone," Khan said in a statement.

"I informed Urban of the change this evening. As I stated in October, regaining our trust and respect was essential. Regrettably, it did not happen."

Darrell Bevell will serve as interim head coach, while Trent Baalke will continue as general manager.

Khan added: "In the spirit of closure and recharging our players, staff and fan base, I will not comment further until some point following the conclusion of the NFL season."
