US Soccer confirms two candidates seeking election in March
Former US Soccer president Carlos Cordeiro and incumbent Cindy Parlow Cone will seek election to control the national governing body in March 2022.
The US Soccer presidential election will take place on 5 March at the Annual General Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia and this week, after eight individuals sought the job, it was confirmed who the final two candidates will be. Former US Soccer president Carlos Cordeiro and incumbent Cindy Parlow Cone will seek election to the position.
Story behind Cordeiro
Carlos Cordeiro is making a push to win back his job after he was forced to resign over a lawsuit regarding language that denigrated the United States women’s national team players in March of 2020. He claimed ‘full responsibility’ for the offensive, sexist and misogynistic language.
Parlow Cone took over the top position replacing Cordeiro becoming the first female US Soccer president. She did a great job leading the national governing body through the coronavirus pandemic and kept working through the restructuring of the governing body.
Cordeiro’s official statement
“In hindsight, I realize that a matter of this importance deserved much more personal oversight from me so that the Federation’s legal strategy and filings showed our women’s players the respect and dignity they deserve,” wrote Cordeiro.
