The Dallas Cowboys have a lot to be thankful for this season but arguably the greatest contribution to them reaching the post-season has been the arm of their star quarterback, Dak Prescott, or Rayne Dakota Prescott to give him his full name. Missing most of the previous campaign due to a serious ankle injury, his worth to the team was never in question, as the franchise handed him a bumper new contract. And boy, has he immediately started to pay it back.

Cowboys’ Prescott: the value of Dak’s arm

‘So, what was that new contract actually worth?’ I hear you ask. Well, the quarterback signed his extension on March 2021 for four years for the not-too-miserly sum of $160 million, making him the second highest paid QB in the league. Oh, and that included a $66 million signing-on bonus.

More NFL news and insight:

A few weeks after signing his whopping new contract Prescott confirmed that he was making a sizeable investment in the world of Texas foodies, specifically in the Walk-On franchise. He also invested in Oxefit, a start-up company that uses robotics and AI to enhance strength training in athletes.

The star is rather accustomed to making endorsements too over the years. From AT&T and Adidas, to Citibank and Pepsi, he is a popular face around town, even getting himself involved in Beats by Dre, among several others. And all that brings in an estimated $50 million.

According to Forbes, the 12 months through to April 2021 saw him take his total earnings to $107.5 million. That's a record for an NFL player! His net worth, all things considered, are said to be north of $40 million.

Prescott straight into Cowboys' saddle

As stated above, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones decided to open out the check book and pay the two time Pro Bowler big bucks after five years with the franchise. Prescott led the Cowboys to a 13-3 record in his first year out of college, throwing for 23 touchdowns and just four interceptions. Dak won the Rookie of the Year that season, but Dallas lost to the Green Bay Packers in the playoffs divisional round.

The Cowboys have only been back to the playoffs once since then, but belief is sky high in the Lone Star State as we reach the postseason. Second year coach Mike McCarthy has a proven track record of winning but hasn’t had a full year with Dak Prescott under center.

Injury put Prescott's future in doubt

In Week 5 of last season Prescott was carted off the field after an ankle he suffered while playing the New York Giants. The former Mississippi State Bulldog’s ankle was mangled, and he would be sidelined for the rest of the year. The Cowboys quarterback left AT&T Stadium with a compound fracture and a dislocated right ankle.

Questions began to arise if Dak would ever play football again. The worst part of the injury aside from the pain and recovery, was Prescott was on the last year of his contract and due for a big pay at the end of the season. The injury tossed his future into jeopardy.

Just about a month after Super Bowl LV, Jerry Jones took a leap of faith by offering his franchise quarterback that four year deal worth $160 million.

Dak swaps Adidas for Jordan

Jones wasn’t the only one to believe in Dak’s comeback bid. Jordan Brand also showed their faith in Prescott in the offseason. After five years with Adidas, the Dallas number 4 made the switch to Air Jordan in the summer. Exact details of the deal were not released but the two parties agreed to a five-year deal that made him the highest paid NFL player represented by the brand.

Prescott stunned in his return to action in the season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He threw for 403 yards with three touchdowns and almost beat the defending Super Bowl champions. His final game ahead of Wildcard Weekend saw him finish the regular season with 37 TDs, in the top five of the league.

While Dak is having a fantastic comeback season, the Cowboys have had their ups and downs across the regular campaign. How it ends for them will be in part down to their star quarterback...but he needs everyone else to step up too if new jewellery is to adorn his fingers come February.
