The Kansas City Chiefs are on to the Divisional Round of the AFC playoffs after a demolition of the Pittsburgh Steelers at Arrowhead on Sunday night. Kansas City’s offense was unstoppable after a scoreless first quarter, scoring on six straight drives.

KC explodes after scoreless first quarter

Pittsburgh knew the the only way to stay in the game was to limit the Chiefs offense by coming up with some big plays on the defensive side of the ball. They kept Kansas City quiet for the opening 15 minutes, picking off Patrick Mahomes once and in the second quarter T.J. Watt took a fumble recovery 26 yards to the house for the game’s first scored.

It seemed like that was all Pittsburgh had to do to wake up the beast that is the Kansas City offense. Patrick Mahomes caught fire and led touchdown drives on the next six possessions. Jerick McKinnon took the first of Mahomes’ five touchdown passes four yards into the endzone to even the game up at 7-7 with under six minutes to go in the half.

Three touchdowns in six minutes to end half

The Steelers first seven drives all ended in punts, and Pittsburgh went three and out on five of those possessions. Pittsburgh’s inefficiency on the offensive end led to two more Chiefs touchdowns before the end of the first half. Mahomes hit Byron Pringle for a 12 yard touchdown pass a play after the Two Minute Warning, and then Travis Kelce went 48 yards on a catch and run to stretch the lead to 21-7, essentially shutting the door on the Steelers chances.

Just six minutes into the second half the Chiefs led 35-7. After receiving the ball out of halftime Mahomes hit lineman Nick Allgretti on a one yard touchdown pass. Pittsburgh fumbled on the next play leading to a 31 yard Tyreek Hill touchdown reception just 42 seconds later.

Big Ben's final game

The Steelers got a couple consolation touchdowns to send Ben Roethlisberger into retirement with his head held high, but the Chiefs had the last say when Byron Pringle caught a two yard Travis Kelce TD pass to put the exclamation point on a convincing playoff win.

Mahomes threw for 404 yards and five touchdowns in the win, and Travis Kelce had 108 yards receiving, catching one touchdown and throwing for another.

The Chiefs will host the Buffalo Bills in the Divisional round of the AFC for a chance to get back to the conference championship for the third straight season.

McKinnon on a screen after a sack on Mahomes. He picks up 23 yards on the screen pass to put the Chiefs inside the 10 yard line. 1st and Goal coming up.

as.com

The Chiefs are down to the PIT 26 after just three plays. If KC scores on this drive, the Steelers will be in a whole lot of trouble, they know that, and so does Kansas City.

as.com

We are underway in the second half! The Chiefs will get the ball to start the third quarter, and their offense has been rolling. PIT needs a stop to stay in this game.

as.com

The Chiefs had over 300 yard of total offense in the first half. Mahomes had 271 yard through the air.

as.com

Here come the Chiefs from their own 20 with under a minute to go. Any score will be devastating for the Steelers who haven't been able to move the ball all night.

as.com

Harvin comes out for PIT's 7th punt of the first half. The Steelers offense has been non existent in the opening two quarters, and are now in danger of going down two scores and giving the ball back to KC to start the third quarter.

as.com

TOUCHDOWN CHIEFS!!!

Mahomes hits Pringle in the corner of the endzone! The 12 yard TD pass puts the Chiefs up 14-7 with under two minutes to play.

KC has woken up since the Watt fumble reovery for a touchdown. PIT needs to show a little life on the offensive end if they want any chance in the second half.

as.com

Back to McKinnon and he picks up 13 yards. You wouldn't know that the Chiefs are without their leading rusher Clyde Edwards-Helaire with the way the McKinnon is running.

as.com

McKinnon goes back to work, he picks up 15 on the counter and the Chiefs are inside the 30 in just three plays.

as.com

Again. When in doubt look for Travis Kelce. Mahomes hits him over the middle for a gain of 31 yards and the Chiefs are at the PIT 43.

as.com

Johnson with another drop on 3rd and short. We have seen him drop a few tonight, and the Steelers can't afford for their top WR to keep making those drops.

Chiefs will take over from their 26 with 4:38 to go in the second quarter. That's more than enough time for Mahomes to drive down the field and take the lead before the break.

as.com

TOUCHDOWN CHIEFS!!!

Mahomes fakes the pass to the flat, and soft ball pitched it to McKinnon for the four yard TD pass to tie the game up.

We are all square at 7-7 with 5:45 to go in the second quarter.

as.com

KC are in the red zone and it appears the Watt scoop and score has woken up the Chiefs.

as.com

Mahomes hits Kelce, and when those two connect it seems like everything is right in the world for the Chiefs. Whenever they are haveing trouble look for Kelce to bail out Mahomes.

as.com

Watt in the right place at the right time, like he has been all season long.

as.com

Hill comes alive with a 20 yard catch and run. Is the defensive touchdown just what the Chiefs needed to wake them up in this game? They look much more efficient on the offensive end at the moment.

as.com

TOUCHDOWN STEELERS!!!

TJ Watt makes amends for his faecmask penalty with a fumble recovery taken to the house!!! Williams fumbled not once but twice, and Watt scooped up the fumble and scored for the first points of the game.

So far the Steelers are doing everything they need to beat the Chiefs. KC looks flat in the first quarter and change of this Wild Card Sunday.

PIT leads 7-0 with 10:41 to go in the first half.

as.com

A facemask on TJ Watt will give the Chiefs a free 15 yards, and that's the best bit of offense they have had so far today.

as.com

The Steelers had 12 total yards through that 1st Quarter, but the second quarter is looking up with a first down to Johnson on a crossing route to move the chains.

as.com

Mahomes going across his body looking for Pringle on third down, but Pringle couldn't make the catch and we end the first quarter with a scoreless tie.

Not many thought the Steelers would be in this game even at this point.

as.com

Robinson makes the catch on 3rd and 11, and that's the first big play of the game for Mahomes and the Chiefs. 15 yard gain and a 1st down for KC who is looking for the first score of the game.

as.com

Short pass to the flat to Hardman on 3rd and 1 and the Chiefs move the chains. Nothing has been easy for KC as we come to the end of the first quarter.

as.com

Both teams have just one first down each

as.com

The Steelers  may not have done anything with that last possession, but the interception changes field position and that is what Pittsburgh needs. Keep the Chiefs from starting drives close to the endzone.

as.com

The Steelers finally have their first first down, as BIg Ben hits Smith-Schuster for 7 yards to move the chains.

as.com

Just when KC had great field position, Mahomes is picked off by Bush after TJ Watt got the deflection at the line.

Steelers ball at their own 30

as.com

Well, if the offense isn't working just yet leave it to the special teams. Hardman takes the punt back 48 yards to the PIT 22

as.com

Roethlisberger is dropped in the back field and that is the third straight three and out for Pittsburgh.

as.com

After four possessions we are still looking for the first first down of the night. WIll it come from the Steelers on this drive?

as.com

The Steelers defense comes up with a big stop on third down around midfield. Big Ben and the Pittsburgh offense isn't going to out shine the Chiefs offense, it's goint to come down to the defense for the Steelers if they want to move on to the next round of the playoffs.

as.com

Points in the 1st Quarter this year:

Chiefs: 130, T-most in the NFL

Steelers: 37, 2nd worst in NFL this season

as.com

Nothing happening on the Steelers second possession. Another three and out from Pittsburgh and the Chiefs will take over from the 21 yard line.

The Steelers won't mind keeping this a low scoring game, but they have to move the ball and turn this into a game of field position rather than a shootout against the Chiefs.

as.com

Here comes the Steelers second drive, starting from the 23 yard line.

as.com

Both teams go three and out on their opening possessions of the game. That may have been expected from the Steelers, but not so much from the Chiefs

as.com

Mahomes has 9 TDs and 0 INTs against the Steelers coming into tonight. Here he comes on the first drive of the night

as.com

The Steelers wanted the ball after winning the toss hoping to get a good start to this game, but the first drive comes up empty and the Chiefs will start from the 42 after a great return from Hardman

as.com

Here we go!!!! The Steelers won the toss and want the ball to start the game.  Here comes Big Ben for perhaps his last first drive of his career.

as.com

The Chiefs got the better of the Steelers in Week 16, winning 36-10 at Arrowhead, but tonight is a new game and Big Ben will be looking for a miracle to start keep his career alive.

Interesting words from Big Ben this week

“We probably aren’t supposed to be here. We’re probably not a very good football team,” Ben Roethlisberger told reporters. “Out of 14 teams that are in, I think we’re probably at No. 14. We’re double-digit underdogs in the playoffs. So let’s just go play and have fun and see what happens.”

The Steelers snuck into the playoffs with an overtime win over the Baltimore Ravens on the last week of the regular season, but that wasn’t enough to secure their spot in the post season.
