The Kansas City Chiefs are on to the Divisional Round of the AFC playoffs after a demolition of the Pittsburgh Steelers at Arrowhead on Sunday night. Kansas City’s offense was unstoppable after a scoreless first quarter, scoring on six straight drives.
KC explodes after scoreless first quarter
Pittsburgh knew the the only way to stay in the game was to limit the Chiefs offense by coming up with some big plays on the defensive side of the ball. They kept Kansas City quiet for the opening 15 minutes, picking off Patrick Mahomes once and in the second quarter T.J. Watt took a fumble recovery 26 yards to the house for the game’s first scored.
It seemed like that was all Pittsburgh had to do to wake up the beast that is the Kansas City offense. Patrick Mahomes caught fire and led touchdown drives on the next six possessions. Jerick McKinnon took the first of Mahomes’ five touchdown passes four yards into the endzone to even the game up at 7-7 with under six minutes to go in the half.
Three touchdowns in six minutes to end half
The Steelers first seven drives all ended in punts, and Pittsburgh went three and out on five of those possessions. Pittsburgh’s inefficiency on the offensive end led to two more Chiefs touchdowns before the end of the first half. Mahomes hit Byron Pringle for a 12 yard touchdown pass a play after the Two Minute Warning, and then Travis Kelce went 48 yards on a catch and run to stretch the lead to 21-7, essentially shutting the door on the Steelers chances.
Just six minutes into the second half the Chiefs led 35-7. After receiving the ball out of halftime Mahomes hit lineman Nick Allgretti on a one yard touchdown pass. Pittsburgh fumbled on the next play leading to a 31 yard Tyreek Hill touchdown reception just 42 seconds later.
Big Ben's final game
The Steelers got a couple consolation touchdowns to send Ben Roethlisberger into retirement with his head held high, but the Chiefs had the last say when Byron Pringle caught a two yard Travis Kelce TD pass to put the exclamation point on a convincing playoff win.
Mahomes threw for 404 yards and five touchdowns in the win, and Travis Kelce had 108 yards receiving, catching one touchdown and throwing for another.
The Chiefs will host the Buffalo Bills in the Divisional round of the AFC for a chance to get back to the conference championship for the third straight season.

McKinnon goes back to work, he picks up 15 on the counter and the Chiefs are inside the 30 in just three plays.
Again. When in doubt look for Travis Kelce. Mahomes hits him over the middle for a gain of 31 yards and the Chiefs are at the PIT 43.
Johnson with another drop on 3rd and short. We have seen him drop a few tonight, and the Steelers can't afford for their top WR to keep making those drops.

The Steelers snuck into the playoffs with an overtime win over the Baltimore Ravens on the last week of the regular season, but that wasn’t enough to secure their spot in the post season. They had to wait until the final snap of Week 18 to know their fate. The Raiders game winning field goal secured their place in this week’s Wild Card match up against the Chiefs.
