Neymar's million-dollar NFT investment

Paris Saint-Germain's Brazilian star, with teammates Verratti and Paredes, has taken ownership of two works from the Bored Ape Yacht Club collection.

Update:
Neymar's million-euro NFT investment

You don’t need to be a connoisseur of Titian, Constable or Monet to have observed the changing landscape of the art world. And as digital works now change hands for billions of dollars annually, we are seeing some of the world's biggest companies, including Meta and Twitter, dipping into these cryptoassets, as well as a selection of celebrities.

Sport stars get into NFTs

Last year alone, non-fungible tokens -- popularly known by the acronym NFT -- moved around 40 billion dollars worldwide, and some star footballers are also getting involved. Real Madrid’s Luka Modric has created his own collection of NFTs and Paris Saint-Germain’s Neymar Jr has shelled out more than a million euros for two interesting pieces.

The Brazilian player has acquired two works from the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) collection through the OpenSea platform, the largest marketplace for this type of token. The payment was made through the Ethereum cryptocurrency and the player paid 159.99 ETH for one of the illustrations and 189.69 ETH for the other, which translated into US dollars would be around $521,000 for the first and $624,000 for the second.

The purchase was made through the personalised wallet he has on the platform with the name 'EneJay' as per his initials, but the most surprising thing is that he later explained on his Instagram profile that he had carried out the operation with two partners. His PSG teammates Leandro Paredes and Marco Verratti have also reportedly paid part of the sum, but neither of them have opted to post any images on social media as Neymar has done.

Bored Ape Yacht Club collection for the famous

The pieces that make up the Bored Ape Yacht Club collection are highly coveted by lovers of digital art, but they have also attracted the attention of well-known faces from all over the world. That list includes rapper Eminem, NBA three-pointer Stephen Curry, and popular TV presenter Jimmy Fallon.

It’s worth noting too that Neymar also signed an agreement with the company NFTSTAR last November to develop, sell and market collectible NFTs.
