AFC Championship: Most appearances, wins, losses
The Kansas City Chiefs are heading to their fourth consecutive AFC Championship Game, but until 2018, they had only made it this far once in 48 years.
This weekend, the Chiefs will host the Cincinnati Bengals in Kansas City for their fourth consecutive AFC Championship game. Before the Chiefs signed Patrick Mahomes as their starting quarterback, they had only made it to an AFC Conference Final one time between 1970 and 2018. With him as their starter, it’s happened four years in a row.
The Bengals, on the other hand, will be making just their third ever appearance, and their first since 1988. With Joe Burrow as their quarterback, they could be looking at a lot more AFC Conference games in their future.
Since its start in 1970, here are the teams who’ve had the most appearances, wins, and losses.
The Pittsburgh Steelers have made the most appearances in the AFC Championship game with 16 total, beating the New England Patriots by one appearance.
The New England Patriots have the Steelers beat with the most victories though, with 11 total victories out of their 15 appearances. Nine of the 11 AFC wins that the Patriots achieved were with Tom Brady at the starting quarterback position. Six of those nine wins with Brady translated into Super Bowl victories (not just appearances).
As the Steelers have made the most appearances, they have also suffered the most losses, with a total of eight, though they have won as many. The Las Vegas Raiders are right behind them with seven losses out of 11 appearances.
The Chiefs host the Bengals this Sunday, January 30 at 3:05 p.m. ET at Arrowhead Stadium. Here's how to watch.
