How much does Rams coach Sean Mcvay make in a year?
The Rams coach is the youngest in the NFL, but also one of the most successful. Here we take a look at how that success is reflected in his salary.
The Rams head coach has most definitely turned heads in his short career so far, but what makes him so special and is it reflected in his his salary? Let's find out.
Who is Sean McVay?
When compared to many other coaches in the league, Sean McVay might appear to be a novice at the tender age of 35. Indeed the Rams' coach is the NFL’s youngest head coach, yet on the other hand he's also one of the most successful. In just his fifth season with L.A., McVay is 45-21, with three playoff appearances, not to mention one of them being in Super Bowl LIII. Where regular-season is concerned, McVay has posted a winning percentage of .682, which is higher than Bill Belichick's .672, Andy Reid's .629 and Sean Payton's .637. If that's not enough he's also the youngest coach in league history to reach a Super Bowl and the youngest to win the Associated Press Coach-of-the-Year award.
The question that arises at that point is simply 'how?' According to the Rams' Chief Operating Officer and executive VP in charge of football operations Kevin Demoff it's about communication. Speaking recently during a podcast, Demoff gave interesting insight into how McVay does what he does. “What jumps out to me with Sean,” said Demoff, “is that he’s the best communicator I’ve ever been around from a head-coaching perspective...and, really, from a life perspective. Whatever Sean wanted to do in life he’d be successful because he has a natural gift of connecting with people, sharing his viewpoints and getting you to believe not only in what he’s teaching you but to believe in yourself. ...Sean tackles problems right away. He’s up front. He knows how to push people’s buttons in a positive, uplifting way and, look, the results show.”
Regardless of opinion, Demoff is correct on his last point in that during McVay's tenure - four seasons - the Rams have never suffered a losing record. In three of those campaigns they qualified for the playoffs, in two of them they won the NFC West and as mentioned before, they went to the Super Bowl in one of them as well - 2018. As the Rams prepare to face the Bengals in Sunday's Super Bowl, all eyes will once again be on McVay as he attempts to elevate himself and his team to the status of legends.
How much is Sean McVay paid?
While it's natural to assume that with all his success in a short space of time he'd be one of if not the highest paid coach in the league, McVay actually sits at #7 on the top 10 list. When the Rams hired him in 2017, he was given a 5-year contract at approximately $2 million per year, however, given the aforementioned success that number has increase by some degree, which is to say today McVay is earning somewhere in the region of $8.5 million per year. Who's above him? The likes of Bill Belichick and Sean Payton to name a couple, meaning, McVay is in the company of league legends. Only time will tell what the young coach can achieve!
