The Wonderlic Test is a tool used by NFL front offices to get a look into the minds of potential draft picks coming out of college. It’s not exclusively used by the general managers around the league, it is used by big corporations around the world.

Wonderlic: How it works

Upcoming rookies take the multiple choice test before the draft. The idea behind the test is to measure cognitive and problem solving ability. Players have 12 minutes to finish the 50 question exam that is scored on a scale of one to fifty.

Tom Landry was the first coach in the NFL to use the aptitude test in the 70s. Twenty is considered the average score, but there have been some NFLers who are leaps and bounds about the rest.

Pat McInally was a punter selected by the CInccinati Bengals in the 1975 NFL Draft. He scored a perfect 50 on the test, and went on to be named to a Pro Bowl and make it to the Super Bowl in the 1981 season. Ivy Leaguer Ryan Fitzpatrick scored a 48 on his Wonderlic, and is still having a successful career in the NFL

Wonderlic doesn't determine NFL destiny

A great score doesn’t guarantee success, take Mike Mamula who was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles, who traded up to take him seventh overall after he posted a 49 on the Wonderlic. Mamula played six seasons and but never made himself a house hold name.

The same can be said about a bad score. While it’s never desired that a draftee receives a bad grade on the Wonderlic, it doesn’t necessarily guarantee the potential pick to be a bust. Frank Gore scored a six on the test, and he went on to finish his career as the NFL’s third all time leading rusher with 16,000 yards.

Looking ahead to the weekend’s Super Bowl we take a look at some of the Los Angeles Rams’ Wonderlic scores. Not every NFL player's score is open to the public, so here are some LA's top stars scores.
