Douglas Costa scores his first goal in MLS in Galaxy’s defeat
The Mexican international couldn’t help the Los Angeles Galaxy walk out with the three points in the 3-2 defeat against Seattle Sounders at Lumen Field.
It was a bittersweet Saturday for Douglas Costa as he scored his first goal in Major League Soccer after three appearances, but the Los Angeles Galaxy lost 3-2 against Seattle Sounders. Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernández scored the opening goal and his second one in the year in the sixth minute after some great collective play from the visiting side.
The Sounders answered back quickly, in the 17th minute Jordan Morris found the back of the net following a corner kick that the Galaxy failed to clear. Just before the break, Julian Araujo tackled Fredy Montero inside the box and the Colombian striker scored from the spot to make it 2-1.
Douglas Costa scores his first MLS goal
Right at the start of the second half Galaxy equalized thanks to Douglas Costa’s free kick following a deflection from the wall. The Brazilian international was proving a constant threat on the right flank, but LA Galaxy’s head coach Greg Vanney decided to take him out in the 69th minute and Victor Vazquez came into the game.
Three minutes later Xavier Arreaga made it 3-2 following a set piece to give the Sounders their first win of the 2022 MLS campaign. A much needed victory for the Sounders that have a short week ahead of them because they have to travel to Mexico to play against Club León for the second leg of the quarter-final of the CONCACAF Champions League.
While the LA Galaxy suffered their first defeat of the campaign, after having two consecutive wins in the two opening matches, they will have to improve if they want to make a run to win the MLS Cup this year. They will return home to host Orlando City SC on 19 March at the Dignity Health Sports Park.
