Indiana Pacers lose Myles Turner for the rest of the season

Its been sometime since the experienced Pacer played in an NBA game and unfortunately that time looks set to extend, after his latest injury setback.

Pacers' Myles Turner is out for rest of season

It was back in mid-January when Myles Turner last played basketball and with the latest news on his injury not being positive, it now seems that he won't be turning out for Indiana anytime in the near future. According to reports, The Pacers' veteran suffered a stress reaction in his foot against the Phoenix Suns on January 14th, and though he was unaware at the time, that injury would actually go on to bring a premature end to his season. Indeed, it has now been confirmed that the Indiana big man is done for the rest of the year, as he attempts to recover from the injury.

The 2nd time running for Myles Turner

As hard as it may be to believe, this is in fact the second consecutive season to end with injury for Turner. Just Last season, he suffered from a toe injury which sidelined him during the Pacers battle to make the postseason. A year later and its now the foot that is the problem. The Pacers, however, are lucky to an extent. Out of contention for a playoff spot, Indiana is currently well positioned for a high lottery pick, which is to say that while they will no doubt be missing Turner, the stakes are considerably lower in his absence and what's more, their current position may yet see them 'rewarded' in the upcoming draft.

Where are the Pacers at now?

With a dismal record of 25-50, the Pacers currently have the NBA's fifth-worst record. In light of that, they are at present set to take the highest draft pick that they have seen since they selected Rik Smits No. 2 overall back in 1988. It should be said that prior to this moment, the Pacers were in the process of restructuring, having traded a number of veterans including Domantas Sabonis. The Lithuanian had previously alternated with Turner at center, but it was clear that the pairing was not a winning formula. As it stands, Turner - when he does return - will more than likely occupy the position on his own, which will undoubtedly afford him the opportunity to mature in his role.

So What's Myles Turner's future?

Set to become a free agent in 2023, Turner is up for a contract extension this offseason. With their new found salary cap space, the Pacers can of course give him a raise, however, the chances of that seem unlikely given his recent struggles with injuries. In truth its a difficult scenario, as Turner is without doubt one of the few big men in the league who can both protect the ring and sink 3's. On the other hand, a player's ability is meaniningless if he's not healthy enough to play.
