Warriors' Draymond Green wants to witness LeBron James make history

As long term rivals the pair know each other very well, so much so in fact that it would seem the Warriors' star doesn't want to miss the moment when King James makes history, whether he's playing against him or not.

Draymond Green thinks LeBron James is #1

To say that LeBron James and Draymond Green are fierce rivals would be quite an understatement. In fact, over the last few years the two have actually faced off in the NBA Finals on four different occasions - 2015 to 2018 - which is to say they know each other very very well. Green of course would likely be quick to point out that its him and his team the Golden State Warriors who have the better record across those showdowns, however, its not for the lack of effort on James' part.

With that said there is of course an immense amount of respect between the two adversaries. Indeed, one could even say that Green follows James' example as was evidenced by his signing with LeBron's agent Rich Paul of Klutch Sports, in 2019. Just one year later Green went a step further when he referred to James on ESPN's First Take as "arguably the greatest player of all time." Suffice to say James himself has clearly taken hold of the idea as he inches closer and closer to the NBA's all-time scoring title, not to mention his the four championships that he's won along the way.

LeBron James closes in on scoring record

One thing is to recognize James' talent, but another is to be present to see it and that's exactly what Green intends to do. Speaking on his podcast, the Warriors star made it clear that he will be in attendance when the historic day arrives on which James breaks the record, regardless of if he has a game to play or not. "Probably in fifty more games or so, fifty to seventy games or so, he'll be first all-time," Green said. "And I can't wait to see that and I hope, Steve Kerr, I'm throwing this out there right now: If LeBron is passing the all-time scoring record and we have a game, I'm going to LeBron's game to witness history. So that's what we doing, coach Kerr."

Of course James recently passed former Utah Jazz star Karl Malone, who sat in second place on the scoring list. As he enters Sunday's game, James is on 36,985 points in his career, which is 1,402 points behind all-time leading scorer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. With his career average of 27.1 points per game, James will need approximately 52 games to break the record. Injury aside, he will arrive at that point somewhere around the middle of next season.

What's Draymond Green's plan?

With LeBron James' date with destiny seemingly inevitable, the question quickly becomes just how will Draymond Green attend the historic occasion? The logistics alone would be problematic if Green were scheduled to play with the Warriors on the same night. The hang up of course, would come if Green attends a game in the hopes of seeing James break the record only to have it not be the case. What would happen then? Would Green be allowed to attend until James finally broke the record or would they simply put the plan on ice? Whether or not Green is able to finally attend James' record-breaking moment, remains to be seen, however, his outright praise and respect for James should come as no surprise as the sportsmanship and positivity between top stars in the league is quite common especially amongst those who are en route to the NBA's Hall of Fame as is the case with Draymond Green and LeBron James.
