June play-offs
Just three World Cup slots are left to be filled, to complete the 32 teams who will be taking part. Those places will go to the winners of three play-offs which will be held in June. Two teams will emerge from the intercontinental play-offs which will be played on 13-14 June in Qatar as well as the final team to qualify through the UEFA play-offs - Wales will face the winner of Ukraine’s meeting with Scotland - their game was due to be played in March but was postponed due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
For the draw, the 32 teams will be divided into four pots numbered 1 to 4, in descending order based on FIFA’s Men’s World ranking as of 31 March 2022. That means that the top seven seeded teams, along with hosts Qatar, will be in Pot 1, the next eight teams in terms of ranking will go into Pot 2, similarly for Pot 3 with the teams with the lowest ranking in Pot 4.
The draw for the group stage will begin with Pot 1. Each team in Pot 1, apart from Qatar, will be allocated to one of eight groups from A to H. Qatar as tournament hosts are in Group A. The process continues for Pots 2, 3 and 4 until all the pots have been emptied.
