As 2023 comes to a close, we take a look back at the year’s celebrity romances that few could ever have predicted.
Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce
Without doubt, the most talked-about couple of the year. After a failed attempt to meet Taylor Swift at one of her concerts, NFL star Travis Kelce got the pop icon’s attention when he revealed on his podcast that he had made a friendship bracelet for her, but had not managed to hand it over. Swift got in touch with Kelce, and sparks soon began to fly between the pair.
Kendall Jenner and Bad Bunny
Rumours of romance between supermodel Kendall Jenner and singer Bad Bunny first surfaced in February, after an apparent double date with Justin and Hailey Bieber. Jenner and Bad Bunny, full name Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, were then seen in each other’s company on several occasions; these included stepping out together at the Coachella musical festival and a Drake concert. The couple went public with their relationship by posing together for Gucci in September, but it was recently confirmed that they have parted ways.
Kylie Jenner and Timothée Chalamet
For years, Timothée Chalamet was viewed as one of the chief exponents of indie cinema… so eyebrows were raised when he was seen alongside Kylie Jenner, the youngest of the Kardashian-Jenner clan. Rumours of a relationship arose early in 2023, after Chalamet and Jenner coincided at Jean-Paul Gaultier’s show at Paris Fashion Week. Later, Jenner’s truck was spotted outside the actor’s house, but it wasn’t until September that they announced themselves as a couple by canoodling publicly at a Beyoncé concert.
Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco
Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco are the year’s best-concealed romance. After throwing her social-media followers of the scent with regular indications that she was single, the singer and actor confirmed her relationship with music producer Blanco earlier in December - and revealed that she had been dating him for six months. Selena announced Blanco to the world as her boyfriend in an Instagram post, describing him as “my absolute everything in my heart”.
Kanye West and Bianca Censori
2023 was the year when rapper and fashion designer Kanye West, who currently goes by the name Ye, gave love another chance. Having admitted publicly that he still missed his ex-wife, Kim Kardashian, the 24-time Grammy winner then unexpectedly married the Australian Bianca Censori, who is the head of architecture at West’s fashion company Yeezy.
Ariana Grande and Ethan Slater
Ariana Grande had a quiet musical year, but that didn’t keep her out of the spotlight. The singer and actor hit the headlines when she separated from husband Dalton Gomez in July, after two years of marriage. Weeks later, it was confirmed that she is dating her Wicked co-star Ethan Slater, who has filed for divorce from his wife, Jay. The mother of Slater’s one-year-old son, Jay has hit out at Grande in the media, telling an interview with Page Six that she is “not a girl’s girl”, adding: “My family is just collateral damage.”
Rosalía and Jeremy Allen White
Rosalía’s break-up with fellow singer Rauw Alejandro came as a surprise to many, particularly as there had been talk of marriage between the pair. In the wake of that split, the Spanish pop star has found a new - and unlikely - love interest in the shape of The Bear actor Jeremy Allen White.
Tom Brady and Irina Shayk
After his divorce from Gisele Bündchen, NFL legend Tom Brady sought to move on from the Brazilian by striking up a romance with another supermodel, the Russian Irina Shayk. After Brady met Shayk at the wedding of a mutual friend, she was caught on camera spending the night at the seven-time Super Bowl winner’s pad. However, their relationship didn’t last: in October, a source close to Brady and Shayk confirmed that they were no longer seeing each other.
Gigi Hadid and Bradley Cooper
Bradley Cooper, the father of Shayk’s child, appears to be taking another shot at love by dating the supermodel Gigi Hadid. Hadid has a daughter with Zayn Malik, but split for good from the former One Direction star in 2021, after an on-off five-year relationship. Although Hadid and Cooper haven’t officially announced that they’re a couple, several insiders have assured celebrity-gossip outlets that they are indeed together.
Halsey and Avan Jogia
Halsey welcomed a son into the world with the screenwriter Alev Aydin in 2021, but their relationship ended the following year. Months after their break-up, the singer revealed that she is dating the Victorious actor Avan Jogia.
